October 6, 1961 THE FULL MOON Varsity Rumbles In Second Half Breaking a scoreless halftime deadlock, Jerry Smith dashed 45 yards for the first score in a three-touchdown flare-up for Al bemarle, defeating Lexington, 20- 0, on their home field Friday night. ; Jerry Smith ran 45 yards on the first play of the second half for the Bulldogs’ first score. Next to; cross the goal line was Jimmy Barbee with a 22-yard romp. Led by a 40-yard gallop by Terry Mabe, Albemarle again scored: when Nelson Smith ran four yards for a third touchdown Lexington was able to hold the Bulldogs during the first half of the game, but could do nothing to stop the fired-up Albemarle team after the halftime intermis sion. Several times Lexington mov ed inside the Bulldogs’ 20. Al though the losers threatened to score several times, Albemarle^ held them each time they ap proached the goal line. Although camp was broken up Wednesday of the second week be cause of sickness, a hectic sche dule was followed until then. Everyone was on the field at 6:30 for about two hours of practice. After eating breakfast in the school cafeteria, the boys were free until 1:00, when they had to return to the school for a rest pe riod. Practice was tb.en held from 3:00 until 5:15. “Lights oiit” was at 9:00. Camp was broken up because of sickness, but practice was held twice a day anyway. About one- third of the team became sick with the virus. Dr. Gaskin and Coach Gantt agreed that it would be safer if all players slept at home. After these two weeks of hard work, the team and coaches look forward to a successful season. Albemarle Beaten By Strong Team Bulldogs met their first defeat by a score of 13-0 at the hands of the hard-hitting Concord Spi ders on September 29, at Webb Field in Concord. Early in the first quarter Al bemarle backfield star Jerry Smith was injured and had to be taken out of the game. Even with this handicap the Bulldogs held the hard driving Spiders scoreless in the first quarter. Concord scored twice in the second quarter, making the ex tra point on one of two attempts, to lead by a score of 13-0. The end of the first half stopped a Bulldog drive, with a score still 13-0 Concord. Albemarle received the kick- off to start the second half roll ing, only to be stopped by the aggressive Spiders. Wito two minutes, 42 seconds left in the final period, Steve Burleson intercepted a pass on his own 18-yard line and ran to the 25-yard line. Nelson Smith picked up a first down and on the next play hurled a pass to Gary Morton, with Morton taking the ball to the Concord 20-yard line. Time ran out with the Bull dogs knocking on the door from the 5-yard line. til the fourth quarter, when a 60- yard drive by Myers Park pushed the Bulldogs to gain their only touchdown with a failure at the extra point. It was only two minutes later that the Bulldogs marched down- field in four running plays to chalk up their second and final TD. Nelson Smith scooted 50 yards for the score, with Jimmy Barbee running the extra point -. Jerry and Nelson Smith work ed together in the Bulldog backfield. Jerry caiTicd thQ^ball 19 times and gained a totaf’of 61 yards, while brother Nelson ran 10 times and marked up 102 yards. These two boys were re sponsible for the 210 yards of Bulldog rushing. Terry Mabe ran the ball four times for a gain of nine yards; Jimrny Barbee gained 30 yards in six times; and Benny Atkins got five yards in three attempts.
