Page 6 THE FULL MOON December 17, 1965 Nancy Walker Enjoys Carrousel Festivities Nancy Walker, Princess Albe marle, participated in the 19th An nual Carrousel activities in Char lotte during the Thanksgiving holi days. She was escorted to the festivities by Kelly Jones, fresh man at N. C. State University. Nancy arrived at the Manger Motor Inn for registration and room assignments at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon. She and her parents and escort attended a tea at the motel from 4-5 o’clock. Later at the banquet the prin cesses met the reigning Carrousel King and Queen, Mayor Stan Brookshire and Sharon Asher, and the Queen who was crowned later that evening, Lynn Burkholder. Mr. Brookshire presented each of the princesses with key charms to the city of Charlotte. Then, beginning with Albemarle, each of them was presented a large and beautiful crown. The girls left by bus for the Coliseum at 8 o’clock, where they were met by their escorts and were photographed. The Corona tion Ball began at 9 o’clock. The King and Queen’s court included pages, knights, squires, heralds, beef - eaters, ladies - in - waiting, dukes, duchesses, and the prin cesses. After the new king and queen were crowned, each princess was presented to the king and queen. Nancy was the first princess. Kelly escorted her from the line of girls to the long red carpet which led to the thrones. She walked alone to the throne where she curtsied, and then returned to her seat. The presentation of the princesses was followed by enter tainment, a banquet, and several dances. Thursday morning the girls at tended a religious service and heard a sermon intitled “Beauti ful Women and Their Power and Role.’’ Later, gifts were present ed to the girls from stores and shops in Charlotte. The girls next had their inter views with the judges who were to pick the new Queen. Each girl was asked four questions, and Nancy was again first. Later in the morning they went to the North Carolina National Bank building penthouse for the Mayor's Luncheon. About 20 mayors were there, including Mayor Garrison and his wife. That afternoon Nancy rode in a convertible in the Carrousel Pa rade, the theme of which was “Songs of America.’’ Nancy’s car was decorated to represent “Over the Rainbow.” At the dinner that evening the name of Queen XX was an nounced. She is Kathryn Walters of Monroe. Nancy stated that she would like to thank all the people who helped with her car, in decorating it and making flowers, and also everyone who came to the parade. French Classes Are Busy The French Department has been quite busy in recent weeks, especially during the holiday sea son. Both Mrs. 'Young’s and Mrs. Deese’s classes have prepared gaily decorated Christmas cards with French sayings, expressions, or short stories in them to bring forth the feeling and spirit of Christmas. Mrs. Young’s students have been giving reports on famous Frenchmen or historical events in addition to their regular works. Dialogues were on the agenda for Mrs. Deese’s first year stu dents; they received their books during the last week before school closed for vacation. The new French lab was termed quite beneficial this year and it has been used frequently by both teachers. SUSAN HOPKINS — Miss Merry Christmas, 1965! Susan Hopkins Is Elected Christmas Queen Susan Hopkins was selected by the Senior class to represent Al bemarle Senior High as Miss Merry Christmas for 1965. As Miss Merry Christmas, Sus an appeared in the annual Christ mas parade staged by the Albe- marle-Stanly County Christmas Activities Committe in down-town Albemarle, Monday, November 29. Susan is an active member of the Boosters Club, Senior Choir, and the Youth Choir of the West Albemarle Baptist Church. She also serves as treasurer of the Library Club. Other nominees for the title were 'Vickie Alexander, Barbara Smith, Barbara Lowder and Bar bara Caudle. Wolf Writes Best Essay Keith Wolf has been announced winner of the essay contest spon sored by the Albemarle Woman’s Club. Putting Christ Back Into Christmas was the subject chosen for the contest. Parents were given the opportunity to speak with the teachers, who were stationed in their rooms. A film strip entitled “How To Study” was shown at 7:30, 8:00, and 8:30 to allow interested parents to see the proper method of study for all students. Student Council members served as guides throughout the evening and FHA members served refreshments consisting of pink punch and cookies in the cafeteria. Debate Club Studies Topic The Albemarle Senior High De bate Club for 1965-66 has been organized under the guidance of Mrs. Sybil Brown. Approximately 20 persons came to the first meet ing. In preparation for a debate tournament in March, the mem bers are now studying and report ing on the topic that they will de bate: Resolved: That the federal government should adopt a pro gram of compulsory arbitration in labor-management disputes in the basic industries. Student Teacher Practices In Biology The Biology Department has a temporary addition to its faculty. Miss Melissa DeLeure. Miss DeLeure is from Hobart, Indiana, and graduated from Pfeiffer College last May. When she completes her student te>ach- ing, she will return home to work for a semester after which she will come back to North Carolina to begin studying for her mas ter’s degree at UNC. At the close of the interview. Miss DeLeure commented, “1 love the South, especially Albemarle. The students here are wonderful. When I finish graduate school, I certainly want to teach in North Carolina.” English Class Mak es Study Ot Magazines Miss Holshouser’s eleventh grade English class has just com pleted a study of magazines for the techniques of reasoning. The students wrote to publishers of ap proximately thirty different mag azines to find out how they com piled their publications. Her sophomore English classes are beginning a study of poetry as it is found in our daily ac tivities. They listened to a va riety of records to get an idea of the different types of poetry. Gamewell Takes Creative Writing At Pfeiffer Mrs. Gamewell is presently tak ing a creative writing course at Pfeiffer College. Mrs. Heather Ross Miller, noted North Carolina poet and novelist, is the instruct or. Mrs. Miller is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and has written Edge of the Woods, a recent best seller. Mrs. Gamewell is very thankful of the opportunity _ to study under such an outstanding literary artist. VICA Says Thanks For Gift The local Vocational Industrial Club of America would like to ex press their appreciation for the contributions given to the “Turkey Fund”. Enough money was re ceived to purchase seventeen large turkeys which were distri buted to needy families Wednes day, November 24, by members of VICA. Shakespeare Is Studied Miss Bishop’s English FV stu dents have been making an ex tensive study of William Shakes peare, which will be climaxed by a term paper from each student on some aspect of Shakespearian drama. The students have also been studying 17th century Eng lish Literature. Students Hear Singing Tree Senior and Junior High students traveled to Charlotte by bus to see the Singing Christmas Tree at Ovens Auditorium, December 13. The students had dinner at The Barclay Restaurant and then at tended the concert. The trip was sponsored by the Modern Music Masters who also sponsored a similar trip last year. Concord Choir Presents Program In Exchange The Concord High School Choir presented a musical program De cember 14. Following the pro gram, choir members had lunch in the cafeteria as guests of the Varsity Singers. This visit was part of an exchange program be tween the Albemarle and Concord Choirs. A Wide Choice Of Paperback Books Teachers Enjoy Week-end Miss Bishop and Miss Holshous- er experienced an enjoyable week end in New York City, visiting such attractions as the United Na tions, the Empire State Building, and Greenwich Village. They also attended the television program, “Let’s Play Post Office” and en countered the Righteous Brothers.
