Page 4 THE FULL MOON Jan. 19, 1972 Greyhounds Trip Bulldogs The Bulldogettes and Bulldogs dropped both ends of a South Piedmont Conference basketball doubleheader to the Statesville Greyhounds, Friday night, January 7 in the Albemarle gym. The Albemarle Bulldogettes were defeated in the opening game 44-34. They trailed during the entire contest and were never able to gain the lead. Stephanie Mason led the winners attack with 11 points. Susan Walker was the runnerup scorer with 10 markers. Albemarle’s leading scorer was Martha Talbert with 12 points. Crystal Waller was close behind, hitting for a total of 11 points. From the foul line Statesville had the better percentage. The visitors converted 12-of-20 from the line for 57 percent. The Bulldogettes hit only 8-of-19 at tempts from the charity stripe for 42 percent. In the night’s second en counter, Statesville’s Greyhounds downed the Bulldogs by the score of 46-43. It was the Bulldogs first loss in SPC com petition. Charles Jurney led the Greyhounds by collecting 17 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Jeff Hudgens was also in double figures with 10 points. Mark Andrew hit the bucket for 19 markers to lead the Bulldog offense. Harry Miller was the second leading scorer with nine points. WKIfle l^'S Lufvcheone-t-ke 1 s For Size Andrew also led the rebounding for the host team with eight retrieves. Miller and Edward Brinson each pulled down seven rebounds during the contest. The Bulldogs were beaten at the foul line where Statesville connected on 12-of-21 for 57 percent. Albemarle converted 9- of-16 for 56 percent. Both teams hit on 17 shots from the floor. Coach Vernon Lentz’s Junior Varsity B-ball squad bowed to the Greyhounds of Statesville 56-42 in an away game, Friday, January 7. First quarter play ran very close, 14-13, with the Greyhounds leading by one; however, by the half they led 30-20. The Bulldogs’ closest moments were in the third quarter, where they pulled within eight points before falling into a Statesville scoring spurge. Tom Knotts led the scoring for the Bulldogs with 16 markers, five field goals and six free throws. Hal Ingram and Joe Watkins rounded out the scoring with 11 and nine points respec tively. Garrison paced the “pups” with 15, with Poole and Lee scoring 10 points each for second place ties. Grapplers Dump Hornets Albemarle grapplers whipped the Salisbury High Hornets, 39-30, in the first home match of 1972 in the Senior High gym. Coach Charles Swanner’s charges had to give up 18 points in forfeits, but came on to win in the strong middle weights. David Ferguson drew first blood with a third period pin over Fritz in the 100 pound class. William Brown stunned Ketchie with another third period pin. John Harrington, co-captain, dazzled the crowd with the match’s quickest pin, 1 min. 8 seconds. Co-captain, Benjie “Hub” Rummage, continued Ferguson’s lead with a pin 1 min. 30 seconds into the final period. “Brick” Wall fell to Heil early in the second period, but Jeff Frick came on to beat Chris Childers 4-0 in a decision match. David Bryson thrashed Wilson with another second period pin 41 seconds into the period. Stand-in, Lew Smith, put up a good fight against heavy weight Tucker, but Lew’s glory was short lived by Tucker’s first period pin with 15 seconds left in the period. In an unofficial contest after the match, Charles Cooper pinned Trexler in the second period. Albemarle Crushes South Rowan Albemarle Senior High’s cagers defeated South Rowan in both ends of a South Piedmont Conference doubleheader Tuesday night, January 4, at South Rowan. In the girls contest, the Bulldogettes triumphed over the Raiderettes by a score of 49-35. The victory was the initial win for Coach Jo Bogle’s squad in SPC competition. Crystal Waller led the scoring for Albemarle netting 16 points. Ginny Deese was the second leading scorer with 13 markers. Cathy Smith led the scoring for South Rowan with 11 points. In the boys contest, the Bulldogs continued their winning ways by tripping the Raiders, 65- 53. Harry Miller played an out standing game for the Bulldogs, scoring a game high 27 points and pulling down 18 rebounds. Dwight Funderburk came off the bench in the second half to preserve the ’dogs lead. In around five minutes of play, Funderburk scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Darryl Ellis was runnerup scorer for the Bulldogs with 12 points. Mark Andrew hit the bucket for 10 markers. Albemarle never trailed during the contest, but South Rowan trimmed the lead to five points late in the fourth quarter. The Raiders were led in scoring by Rocky Hoffman with 16 points. Albemarle J. V.’s, coached by Mr. “Red” Lentz, slipped past the Raiders of South Rowan 49-48 in a cage conflict Friday, January 4, in the Senior High gym. The Bulldogs led through the entire game, with the halftime score 27-15. South Rowan’s comeback in the second half was not enough to upset the Bulldogs’ early lead. The Raiders scored 33 points in the second half as compared to Albemarle’s 22. Hal Ingram scored 12 points to pace the Bulldog offense, with Joe Watkins close behind with 11. Bost led the scoring for the Raiders with 12 markers.
