November 22,1972 THE FULL MOON Page Three Game Stars Selected ^ V. "V-> Lew and Coach Wheeler discuss Bulldog strategy. Lew Makes Shrine Team This year, Albemarle will be represented in the Shrine Bowl Game. Lew Smith, who played in the linebacker spot and was one of the captains, has the honor of attending this annual event. When Lew was asked about this year’s football play, he stated, “Our team displayed desire and effort which made our successful season possible. This is the first time in my varsity career I’ve been able to play on a team that played as a team.” Smith continued, “Everyone gave all he could for the benefit of the team with no personal glory in mind.” Lew, when asked his thoughts on going to the Shrine Bowl, related, “I’m very surprised and happy to have the opportun ity to play in the Shrine Bowl. I don’t see how I qualified for this honor but I’ll do my best not to disappoint anyone.” Bulldog Cagers Await Season The 1972-73 basketball team is preparing for the upcoming season. Coach Jo Bogle of the Bulldogettes, said the team is exhibiting fine team effort. Seniors who are returning from last year are Monica Baldwin, Bonnie Little, Janice Hooker, Kim Woodruff, and Ellen Morrow. Juniors returning from last year are Crystal Waller, Marla Cooper, and Rosemary Almond. Sophomores on the team are Deborah Dunevant, Joy Ussery, Phyllis Christian, Sharon Dav is, Debra Morgan, Kristi Wil helm, and Lisa Turbeville. Kristi Whitley will be the team manager. The Bulldog Cagers, coached by Ken Frazier, are also working hard in preparation for this year’s play. Seniors who are returning from last year are Myron Harrington, Darryl Ellis, Mark Phifer, Ed Brinson, and Leo nard Hawkins. Juniors who will see action are Joe Watkins, Mike Morton, Hal Ingram, Robert Stoker, and Tom Knotts. All juniors gained ^ experience on the Junior Var sity squad. Two sophomores picked to play varsity are Kenny Clark and Ricky Hamilton. The Junior Varsity team, coached by Red Lentz, are as follows; Stuart Jones, Ronnie Marshall, Traicy Hicks, Jeffery Kirk, Gary Davis, Mark Fra zier, Keith Frazier, Matt Car penter, Doug Lowder, Mike Murray, Robert Rushing, and Niven Burleson. When asked about playing in college, Lew remarked, “I’d like to play college ball any place I attend.” Lew was asked about getting mentally ready for the Shrine Bowl and he commented, “I think it will be easier to get up for the Shrine Bowl than a regular season game because there probably won’t be as much pressure. Because it is a bowl game, it is something special.” BY JAN GRIFFIN Lew Smith was the defensive player of the week against Lexington and both the offen sive and defensive player of the week against Statesville. In the Lexington game. Lew was in on ten tackles and made 15 against Statesville, ending the season with 124 tackles. Lew said the Bulldogs lost to Statesville mainly because of the muddy fielti. Concerning the overall season. Smith related, “It’s been the best one we’ve had in the past several years. Success has to be due to the great coaching staff and, of course, the dedication of the players.” “The team was keyed by the great seniors, who will be missed, but with Coach Wheeler back next year, Albemarle should look for another winning season. Also a defensive player of the week for the game with Lexington was Ernest Smith. Ernest, a junior, playing the position of safety, made two tackles. Concerning the 41-6 victory for the Bulldogs, Smith related “It’s a great feeling to win for the Bulldogs! I think they’ll go all the way next year with the help of the great coaching. Juniors Upset Seniors The junior girls, coached by Tom Knotts, David Sanges, Buddy Clark, John Frederick, Chuck Gaskin, Ronald Wall, and Mike Smith, pulled a surprising upset over the senior girls coached by David Bryson, Boyce Baucom, Jeff Redwine and Eddie Burris, by the score of 12-6, in the Powder Puff game Friday night, November 10, at the local stadium. In the first quarter, Debra Bryson raced around left end 43 yards for the seniors’ score. Bryson was the leader on offense for the seniors through out the game. The try for two failed. The juniors came back strong in the second quarter as Melinda “Monster” Moose rac ed around left end 15 yards on a reverse for the juniors’ first score. A pass fell incomplete to Patty Oettinger that nullified the try for two. The girls went into the locker room at half- time with the score tied at 6-6. Half-time was highlighted by an array of raving beauties for Homecoming activities. Boys dressed up as girls acted as sponsors for the junior and senior girls. John Frederick sponsoring Bess Knotts was crowned the queen of the junior class. Perry Montgomery, spon soring Joanne Harvers, was given the queen honors for the senior class. In the third quarter, the juniors kept their momentum when Melinda “Monster” Moose hit “Jiving” Jenell Hudson with a 15 yard pass completion for the juniors’ second score. Moose threw again to Hudson for the extra point but the pass fell incom plete. The score at the end of the third quarter was 12-6 in favor of the juniors. The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. Harrington scored three touchdowns making his seasons total twelve touchdowns. Now that the season is over, Myron related, “We had a fine season but we played a couple of bad games we should’ve won. I wish we could’ve gotten to play Statesville on a dry field. I think it would have been a different story.” David Bryson, a senior, at his offensive tackle position, block ed extremely well in the game against Lexington. David said, “The game was comletely one-sided because the offensive executed well and the defense held {heir offense.” According to David, the strong point of the game was the superb blocking by the offensive line. Curtis Paschold was an offen sive player of the week against Lexington. At his right guard position, Paschold was one of the most aggressive blockers of the offensive line. Pigskin Club Honors Bulldogs With Banquet The Bulldog football squad received special tribute in the form of a banquet, Thursday evening, November 9, in the cafeteria. Football players, along with parents, coaches, trainers, and cheerleaders attended this func tion sponsored by the Albemar le Pigskin Club. Seniors Invade East Carolina The seniors of the Albemarle football squad left Saturday morning, November 8 en route to East Carolina University, where they were the guests of the ECU athletic department. Among their activities the senior ‘Dogs attended a football game which matched the Pir ates of ECU against the Dayton Flyers. The group spent the night in Greenville and returned the next day. All of the groups expenses, other than their tickets, which are provided by the ECU coaches, were handled by the Albemarle Pigskin Club. Coach Wheeler related, “This trip was an attempt to show our appreciation to the seniors for their efforts of the past season.” Following the meal, the awards ceremonies began. Highlight of the program was a speech by Mike McGee, head football coach at Duke Univer sity. Following previous selection by the squad, seniors received the following trophies. Myron Harrington was honored as outstanding offensive back; Curtis Paschold, for outstand ing offensive lineman; Lew Smith, for outstanding defen sive lineman; Darryl Ellis, for outstanding defensive back; and Eddie Burris received the Bulldog Award. Other seniors receiving troph ies were David Bryson, Billy McSwain, Sammy Ferguson, Jeff Redwine, Leonard Haw kins, Jeff Frick, Bruce Davis, Boyce Baucom, and Bobby Daurity.
