Their main activities Mr. Whitley Initiates Changes With the arrival of the ’78-’79 school year many Changes have come about. One of the most important is the addition to the administration, the principal, Mr. Charles Whitley. Mr. Whitley comes to the Senior High from being Assistant Supertintendent of Transylvania County Schools. Although he is new to the High School, Mr. Whitley has worked within the Albemarle City School system before. After his graduation from UNC at ,Chapel Hill, he began teaching the eighth grade at the Junior High. Later he became Principal at East Albemarle Elementary School. • Mr. Whitley has initiated changes in the school. Instead of two 45 minute lunch periods as in the past, there are now three 30 minute periods. The reason for this different lunch schedule is to get the school ready for the ninth grade’s move to the High School next year. With all of those students, lunch will run much more smoothly with three periods instead of two. As far as sixth period is concerned, Mr. Whitley has decided that the students with this period study hall will not leave but will remain at school until 3 p.m. In addition to Mr. Whitley, there are other newcomers at the Senior High. In the area of physical education there are two new teachers. Mr. Bill Rogers is the physical education director, head football coach and history teacher. He graduated from Appalachian University and later coached there for a year. His football coaching career also Mr. Whitley takes a break from his busy schedule. includes Garringer and North Mecklenburg High School where he was defensive coordinator. Mr. Stan Butler who teaches physical education also helps with the athletic department. Mr. Butler graduated from Elon and has taught and coached at West Mecklenburg and West Ala mance. Another change in this area is that Mr. Vernon Taylor is the new athletic director. Mrs. Mildred Carter who has previously taught at North Stanly, South Stanly and ASHS has again joined the business department. In the art room there is another new teacher, Ms. Lois Staton. Ms. Staton graduated form the University of Georgia and is beginning her fifth year as an art teacher. 'The marching band will also be different this year. Besides the addition of five rifle girls, the band has been outfitted in new royal blue uniforms. The uniforms arrived during the summer and were stored away until school started. The Bulldog Finds Its Roots See Page 2 consisted of learning more about the government and how it was run. New Squads Enliven Activities The school year is in full swing again, and everyone looks for ward to pep rallies and football games. Throughout the summer different groups of students have been practicing long and hard to make these events exciting and colorful. The ’78-’79 cheerleaders at tended a three hour clinic on Saturday, July 15. It was headed by the UNC-Chapel Hill cheerleaders. The girls have practiced 2 hours a day 3 days a week all summer. Along with chief Renee Cooper, the squad includes Georgia Anne Canon, Cheryl Freeman, Kelly Holt, (alternate).
