January 31,1980 THE FULL MOON Pages Varsity Teams Work For Future Success Boys Face Disappointment This year’s varsity basketball season began on November 27 as the Bulldogs traveled to West Stanly to take on the Colts. Albe marle came away with a win, 66- 60. Chico Lilly led the Bulldogs in scoring with 20 points, while Laron Maske added 12 and Lacester Crump and Frank Howard each scored 10 points. Frank shot 10 for 10 from the free throw line. In the second game of the season the Rebels of South Stanly visited the local gym and de feated the Bulldogs with a score of 61-54. Leading scorers for Albe marle were Lacester Crump and Laron Maske with 22 and 12 points respectively. On December 4, the Bulldogs traveled to Northwest Cabarrus for their first conference skir mish of the year. Coach Holcomb’s team wound up on the short end of the score, 81-66, as they were dominated by a strong and aggressive Trojan squad. Leading the Albemarle offense were Chico Lilly with 17 points and sophomore Doug Davis with 13. Albemarle traveled to Sun Valley next and got back on the winning track by beating the Spartans 84-65, bringing their won-lost record to two wins against three defeats. Once again Lacester Crump and Chico Lilly led the Bulldogs in scoring. Lacester has a game high with 31 points while Chico added 19 markers. Albemarle traveled to Forest Hills on December 14 to lose a heartbreaker with a score of 58-56 to the host Yellow Jackets.Kenny Davis and Lacester Crump each netted 18 points to pace the Bulldogs. The next game found the Bull dogs once again on the losing end of the score as East Rowan invad ed the local gym and emerged the winner with the score being 74-66. Lacester Crump led the Albe marle attack with 19 points while Kenny Davis added 11 markers. In the final game before the Christmas break the home squad defeated visiting Central Cabar rus with a score of 61-47. Four Albemarle players scoring in the double figures were Lacester Crump with 12 points, Kenny Davis with 12 points, and Chico Lilly and Doug Davis with 10 points each. December 27-28 were the dates for the Stanly County Classic this year. In the first game of the tournament, North Stanly defeated South Stanly 55-48, as Cal Benson led North with 19 points and Grover Shankle scored 16 points in a losing cause for the South Stanly Rebels. In the second game of the night, Albemarle trounced the West Stanly Colts with a score of 66-51. Chico Lilly led the Bulldogs in scoring with 18 points while Laron Maske, Lacester Crump, and Kenny Davis each scored 10 points On Friday, December 28, South Stanly defeated West Stanly in the consolation game with the score being 56-54. Grover Shankle again led Rebel scoring with 17 markers. Joe Huneycutt led the Colts with 25 points. In the championship game North Stanly defeated Albemarle by the score of 88-75. Lacester Crump led the Bulldog action in scoring 32 game points. Crump also led tournament scoring with 42 points. On January 2, the Bulldogs played their first game of the new yegr against local rivals North Stanly and wound up on the short end of a 64-53 score. Chico Lilly led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Forfeits Costly For Wrestlers The first half of Albemarle’s wrestling has been somewhat disappointing for new head coach, Steve Bean. He feels that the team could improve in the second half of the season. The Bulldogs have a 3-3 record in duel matches. The first match was against Mount Pleasant. The Bulldogs were edged by the Tigers by a 33-30 team score. Greg Little, wrestling in the 112 lbs. class, Doug Connell (126 lbs.), Jerry Russell (138 lbs.) Dale Speight (145 lbs.), Stewart Boone (155 lbs.), and David Chandler (195 lbs.) were the individual win ners for the Bulldogs. The out come of this match could have been very different if Albemarle had not been forced to forfeit two weight classes. On December 7, the Bulldogs traveled to Charlotte for a match with Charlotte Catholic. Catholic won the match by a score of 35-21. Albemarle, how ever, had good performances from Kevin Norton (105 lbs.), Doug Connell (126 lbs.), and Jerry Russell (138 lbs.), each Winning his match. David Chandler received a forfeit. The Bulldogs received their Worst beating at the hands of a fine North Rowan team on De cember 10. North Rowan won by a score of 47-18. Doug Connell (126 lbs.) and Stewart Boone (155 lbs.) won their matches and Kevin Norton (105 lbs.) and Jeff Harris (HWT.) received forfeits. Albemarle’s first victory came against South Stanly. They soundly defeated the Rebels 51-17. Jeff Russell (112 lbs.), Doug Connell (126 lbs.), Todd Rogers (132 lbs.), Jerry Russell (138 lbs.), Dale Speight (145 lbs.), Stewart Boone (155 lbs.), Frank Miller (167 lbs.), and David Chandler (195 lbs.) were all winners for the Bulldogs. On December 17, the Bulldogs went to Randleman and came away with another big victory by a 46-24, score. Kevin Norton (105 lbs.), Greg Little (112 lbs.), Mike Morton (119 lbs.), Doug Connell (126 lbs.), Todd Rogers (132 lbs.), Jerry Russell (138 lbs.), Stewart Boone (155 lbs.), and David Chandler (195 lbs.) all won their matches. Albemarle traveled to South Stanly for a match with the Rebels on January 7, and again defeated the Rebels by a 38-24 score. Mike Morton (121 lbs.), Doug Connell (128 lbs.), Jerry Russell (140 lbs.), David Living ston (147 lbs.), Stewart Boone (154 lbs.), and David Chandler (197 lbs.) won their individual matches. Kevin Norton (105 lbs.) and Greg Little (112 lbs.) received forfeits. The Bulldogs have also been participating in some tourna ments. As a team, Albemarle has not fared too well; however, the Bulldogs have had some ex cellent individual performances. In the Albemarle Invitational held on January 5, the Bulldogs finished sixth as a team, but Doug Connell (121 lbs.) and Dale Speight (140 lbs.) took first places and David Livingston (147 lbs.) and Stewart Boone (157 lbs.) got second places. Phone 704/983-4107 “I am definitely disappointed in our season at this point,” com ments Coach Lentz halfway into the girls’ basketball season. “I’m pleased with the team’s attitude and hard work. If we could become consistent, we could play with anyone in the conference. At times we look like a million dollars, and then whow, all of our screws become loose.” The Albemarle Bulldogettes opened the 1979-80 cage season with disappointment. The spirited West Stanly Colts defeated the Bulldogettes by a score of 73-44 in the non-con ference game. Albemarle failed to penetrate the Colt full court press. Caroline Lilly led the scor ing with 13 points followed by Stephanie Pollard with 12. Albemarle maintained a close score with the South Stanly Rebelettes in their next game. Albemarle led by 6 points at the half but soon fell behind to be out- scored 45-38 in the end. The Northwest Cabarrus Lady Trojans took the victory on December 4, with the score of 51- 19. The Bulldogettes were unable to generate any action. Stephanie Pollard was the leading Albe marle scorer with a total of six points. Albemarle was caught in a web on December 7 as the Lady Spiders of Concord won with the score being 41-25. The fourth quarter hurt Albemarle as they were outscored 15-5. Caroline Lil ly led the Bulldogettes with a score of 10 points. The Lady Spartans of Sun Valley won over the Bulldogettes on December 11, with a score of 53-34. After five losses the Bull dogettes took their well deserved victory over the Forest Hills Jackettes on December 14 with a score of 23-20. Outstanding players for Albemarle were Caro line Lilly, Laura Mauldin, Stephanie Pollard and Laura Yost. The East Rowan Lady Mustangs beat the Bulldogettes on December 17,. 55-41. Albe marle’s strong defense, however, kept the Mustangs’ scoring well under the 65 point average. Stephanie Pollard once again highlighted the Bulldogettes’ score with 25 points. On December 19, the Lady Vik ings of Central Cabarrus tri umphed over the Bulldogettes with the score being 27-21, al though both teams were very competitive. Caroline Lilly was the leading scorer, contributing six points to the Albemarle score. Hopefully the girls will become consistent and improve their record. Drop In and See Us!
