Kathy, a sophomore, finished with a record of 5-3 in regular season play. * * * * . . . Lacester Crump, Doug Faulkner, Dave Moose, and David Russell, for being named to the SPC All Conference Football Team-Second Team. Congratulations also go to Chico Lilly and Erick Mack who received Honorable Mentions. * * * * . . . Lacester Crump, for his fine performance in the Stanly County Basketball Tournament. Lacester was high scorer for the tournament with a total of 42 points for two games. * ♦ * * . . . Lucy McKeithen who finished The Charlotte Observer 10 Kilometer (6.2 miles) Race with a time of 59:35. With this kind of effort and dedication Lucy should make a fine addition to the Albemarle Girl’s Track Team. J.V. Loses Close Games -V Donnell Wall scores 2 of his 12 points against Northwest Cabar- Skiers Head For The Mountains of North Carolina Shoosh! That’s the sound of snow skiers sliding down the slopes of crispy white snow. This scene could take place in Aspen, or Vale, Colorado, in St. Moritz, Switzerland or in Suzi Chapsticks backyard; but it doesn’t. This scene comes directly from one of the ten ski lodges in the North Carolina Mountains. The most popular beginners slope is Appalachian Ski Moun tain, which is located eight miles south of Boone in Blowing Rock. Appalachian has seven slopes: two beginner, three inter mediate, one advanced and one expert. The longest slope is 2,700 feet. Lessons are $7 and lift rates are per day — Saturdays — $12, Sundays — $10, weekdays — $7, nights (not including Mondays and Thursdays) — $6. Equipment may be rented for $7 on weekends and $6 on weekdays. For informa tion call 704-295-7828. Beech Mountain, the highest ski area in the east, is located at Banner Elk, North Carolina. It has 12 slopes, five beginner, five intermediate, and two expert. Weekday lift rates are $11 — day, $7 — night, $9 — twilight, and $15 — day and night. Weekend rates are $15 — day, $10 — night, $13 — twilight; and $19 — day and night. Equipment rentals are weekdays — $7, weekends — $10. Group rates and vacation packages are available. For more information call 704-387- 2011. Cataloochee, which lies in Mag gie Valley, is the state’s oldest resort. The High Meadow run is the most Colorado-like slope available. It covers up to two miles on open slopes. Cataloochee also has seven other various runs. Lift rates are $8 — weekdays, $13 — weekends, and $6 — nights. Mill Ridge Ski Mountain located at Foscoe offers four slopes, one beginner, two in termediate, and one expert. Lift tickets are $6 — weekdays, $6.50 — night, and $10 — weekends. Sapphire Valley Ski Resort lies about 50 miles from Asheville in Cashiers, North Carolina. This resort offers two main slopes about 1,500 feet each plus a new slope and trail, making a total of four runs, one beginner, two in termediate, and one expert. The resort also features ice skating and tobagganing. Lift prices are $8 — weekdays, $6 — night, and $12 — weekends. Equipment ren tals are $7 — weekdays, $4 — night, and $11 — weekends. For more information call 704-898-4521. Wolf Laurel Resort is located near Mars Hill, North Carolina. This resort offers eight slopes, one beginner, three intermediate, and four expert. Adult rates are $8 — weekdays, $13 — weekends. At midseason of the JV basket ball season the team’s record stood at 2-7. The team has been working hard, has played well, and has lost most of their games by rather close margins. The opening game was played here at Senior High on November 27. The disappointing outcome was a defeat by the West Stanly Colts. The Colts overcame the Bulldogs by a 46-38 score. The game itself was much closer than this score indicated as West Stan ly did not gain control of the game until the closing seconds. “Meatball” Brooks and Jimmy Wentz led the Bulldog scorers with ten points each. On November 30 the Bulldogs demolished a faltering South Stanly team by the score of 64-38. Brad Spence led the way for the Bulldogs hitting for 19 points. Everyone was pleased with the team’s effort and each player saw at least some action in the game. December 4 the J.V. team played host to the Trojans from Northwest Cabarrus. The Bull dogs lost a heartbreaker by a 63- 59 score. “Meatball” Brooks led all scorers with 16 points and Donnell and Vonnell Wall added 12 and 13 points respectively. The Bulldogs traveled to Con cord for their next game. This one proved to be a difficult loss as the two teams went to the wire. With eight great ski resorts like those mentioned above you no longer have to travel to Switzer land, Quebec, or Colorado when you want to experience the thrill of skiing. A skiing wonderland lies just 150 miles away in the mountains of North Carolina. the Spiders led 50-49 and the dis appointed Bulldogs left the court defeated. “Meatball” Brooks scored 15 points and Donnell Wall added another 15 points for the Dogs. On December 11, the Sun Valley Spartans came to Albe marle to challenge the Bulldogs. The team again lost this game in the last remaining minutes by the score of 45-40. Demetrius Brooks once again led in scoring for Albemarle as he pumped in 14 points. Albemarle traveled to East Rowan December 17 where the Mustangs took control and cruis ed to a 59-46 score in a game that was never really close. Vonnell Wall led Albemarle scoring with 11 points. After the J.V. team faced Cen tral Cabarrus in a game that they would probably just as soon forget. The Bulldogs lost the game by a lopsided 59-39 score. After losing two games badly to East Rowan and Central Cabar rus the Comets of North Stanly came to Albemarle to play the Bulldogs January 2. North Stanly won the game by a 55-47 score in a game that was closer than the score showed. Donnell Wall was high scorer for the J.V. team with 11 points. Although the J.V. record is only 2-7, the team has lost some very tight games in which they easily could have won. The team is presently working hard in an ef fort to salvage a winning season.
