October 31,1980 THE FULL MOON Pages North Stanly: Albemarle’s Annual Rival Students Thanked For Services Miss Laura Yost, President Albemarle Senior High Student Government Association Albemarle, North Carolina 28001 Dear Laura: The Stanly Actioneers Civitan Club Members wish to thank the Albemarle Senior High Student Government Association for their support and much needed help in the Stanly County Special Olym pics which were held on October 17,1980. The comments received thus far have indicated these games were the most successful ever conducted in Stanly County. This was possible because of the sup port of the Student Government Association. I personally consider it a pleasure to have worked along side these student volunteers at the Olympic games and look for ward to being associated with these students in the future. Sincerely yours, STANLY ACTIONEERS CIVITAN CLUB, INC. Lynda Whitener President Compliments of Crook Truck & Trailer Parts Co. 1467 Salisbury Hwy. ALBEMARLE, N.C. Distributors Prices on Delco Batteries Victory JV's Win First Game Ever By GREG UNDERWOOD This year’s North Stanly game will be played at North Stanly on Halloween night. The special date, the traditional rivalry with North and last year’s 28-7 defeat make this game highly anticipated by the two teams. As usual, the game should be a close hard-fought battle. Albemarle has a somewhat better defense than North Stanly. The Bulldogs, recognized as the “Real Dogs” by the Salisbury Post, have seven defensive starters that returned from last year. Some of Albemarle’s most experienced and key defensive players are Ends Jimmy Wentz and Greg Underwood, Tackle Eric Mack, and Linebackers David Moose and Eddie Snuggs. All of these players are returners from last year. Offensively, Albemarle has some experience on the line. Jimmy Wentz, Bobby Gasskin, and Eric Mack all are returners from last year. Eddie Snuggs and Chico Lilly are both experienced running backs. The Comets defense also has some experience. Returners from last year include: Tackle Rex Rogers and Linebackers Kenny Spencer and Tiger Speight. Offensively the Comets have a pretty good back field. They have Quarterback Doug Carter, Fullback Tiger Speight, and Tailback Ed die Goode. All of these backs have some experience in the backfield. The Bulldogs have an edge defensively with the seven experienced defensive starters. They will have to play tough to stop the Comets running game. Tiger Speight is tough to bring down at Fullback while Eddie Goode has good speed. They also have a couple of good receivers in Marty Wallace and Kenny Spencer. Both of these ends are Senior Lettermen. Their quarterback Doug Carter is also a Senior Let- terman. Albemarle’s offensive unit should be able to move the ball suc cessfully against the Comets defense. North Stanly’s defensive unit is the best at the tacklespot v/ith Rex Rogers. He will be going up against Center Jimmy Wentz and Tackle Eric Mack. Their linebackers are tough with Tiger Speight and Kenny Spencer filling these positions. Jimmy Wentz, Eric Mack, Bobby Gaskin, and Arlie Sides will be mat ched up with the Linebackers. Quarterback Mack Morgan is only a sophomore, but he has been playing pretty well this year. The Backfield for the Bulldogs has the most depth with Greg Underwood and Patrick Eaton filling the right halfback position. David Livingston and Chico Lilly fill the left halfback position. Eddie Snuggs fills the fullback position. All of these running backs have had experience in the backfield. Most of them also are fairly large. This game should be pretty evenly matched up offensively, but the Bulldogs defense has a little more experience. Both teams have a lot of players going both ways. The team with the most dedication, desire, and determination will come out on top at this Halloween night special. By DAVID SMITH For the first time in many years, the Bulldogs won a football game, by defeating the Mustangs of East Rowan. Last year the Bulldogs were 0-9-1, tieing the first game of the year against West Stanly. The Bulldogs played the East Rowan squad on October 2, 1980, in our stadium. They won this hard fought battle by sheer determination and an excellent swarming defense. The Blue and White won by the score of eight to six. They got on the board by a two yard run from Clarence Lynch for the six-pointer, John Teal grounded hard for the two points that turned out to be the winning margin. The past several weeks the Albemarle Junior Varsity foot ball squad has been playing some tough and well organized ball. The hard-hitting defensive punch held the Mustangs to only six points. Coach Fast was ex tremely pleased with the whole teams enthusiasm as all the team members laid a hand in the stop ping of the Mustangs. The defen sive surge was led by intercep tions by Doug Winecoff, Tony Russell and Rick Lowder, and a fumble recovery by James Cato. Next the J.V.’s traveled to Forest Hills for an away encoun ter. The Bulldogs lost this one by the score of 20-6, but played tough all the way through this hard hit ting challenge. The Bulldogs were down 14-0 at halftime, but scored quickly in the third quar ter as Ricky Lowder hurled a 45 yard pass to Tony Underwood for the only Bulldog score of the night. Forest Hills then came back to score late in the fourth quarter to give them the 20-6 deposite. On offense, Ricky Lowder, Tony Underwood. Danny Hamil ton, Kevin Britt, and Tony Rus sell were commended for their play. On defense, the strong play was led by Clarence Lynch, Doug Winecoff, Tony Russell who inter cepted a pass, and Tony Under wood. On Thursday night, October 16, 1980, the J.V.’s faced another bruising team. The Bulldogs lost 20-6, but really stayed in there as they (Bulldogs) delivered a lot of scrutinizing pain in their persis tent defensive play. Concord led at halftime 14-0 and scored once again in the third quarter. Thus far, the Bulldogs have faced a rough schedule, but the improvement has been shown in every game. The future looks ex tremely promising as the team strengthens, both offensively and defensively. FURNITURE AAonday-Saturday Fridays until 9:00 p.m. Complete Home Furnishings 1000 N.
