Seniors Show Their Stuff
Part of the quality of a school
depends upon the type of students
it produces. Super seniors are
part of what makes our school
special. These students are peo
ple who their classmates can be
proud and who under-classmen
can look up to. The quality of our
high school is represented in
these students.
Paula Cox
Paula Cox was chief cheerlead
er during her senior year and has
been a cheerleader since the
seventh grade.
Paula was a member of the
National Honor Society. She was
Vice President of the student
council during her junior year
and was a member of the Media
Club for two years. During her se
nior year Paula was the Business
Manager for The Full Moon.
Her hobbies include bike-rid
ing, going to parties, and listen
ing to music.
Paula plans to attend UNC-
Chapel Hill next fall.
Janet Efird
Janet Efird was senior class
president for the 1981 class and
has been a member of the student
council during all her high school
years. Janet was a member of the
NHS and Who’s Who Among
American High School Students.
She was also a junior marshall at
last year’s graduation. Janet was
a member of the News Staff of
The Full Moon.
Janet’s hobbies include going
to the beach, sailing, and swim
ming.
This summer she plans to work
in Myrtle Beach and take fresh
man English at Coastal Carolina.
This fall she will attend UNC-
Chapel Hill.
Kenneth Russell
Kenneth Russell is an outstand
ing example of talent and cre
ativity. Throughout his high
school years, he has participated
in several activities both scholas
tic and extra-curricular.
Kenneth’s interest lies mainly
in acting. For the last two years

Prom
The Junior-Senior prom was
held on May 15. “The Band of
Oz” performed at this event.
Student Council Helps
The Student Council helped
with the Special Olympics at
Camp Barnhardt on Tuesday,
Mays.
School Comes to an End
The last day of classes for
the seniors was June 2. Grad
uation was on June 5. All other
students will be taking exams
from June 7 to June 10.
All-Sports Banquet
The All-Sports Banquet was
held on May 26 at Harward’s
Steak House. The guest
speaker was Woody Durham.
Election Time
The Student Council started
the elections for the new of
ficers of 1981-1982 on May 10.
Petition week was from May
10 to May 15. Campaign week
was from May 18 to May 23.
The final election for the
President, Vice-President,
Secretary, and Treasurer was
on May 25.
he has been president of the
Drama Club and performed in
several plays. Last year the
Drama Club presented Neil Si
mon’s “The Good Doctor” in
which Kenneth played two dif
ferent roles. This year, they pre
sented “Dracula” which Kenneth
co-wrote with Fred Corlette. Ken
neth played the part of Dracula.
He performed also in “The
Bear”, presented by the visiting
artist program at Stanly Tech.
This play went on tour throughout
North Carolina. Later this year,
Kenneth joined the Uwharrie
Players and they presented
“Dark at the Top of the Stairs”.
Here Kenneth played the role of
Sammy Goldenbomb. Kenneth
has been asked to perform in
“Unto These Hills’ in Cherokee
this summer.
Kenneth has not only perform
ed well in the arts, he has also
participated in scholastic ac
tivities and received several
awards. Kenneth was a marshall
during his Junior year, he was a
Moorehead Scholarship nominee,
a DAR Good Citizenship re
cipient, a student Rotarian, and a
National Merit Scholarship
Finalist.
Kenneth was vice president of
the National Honor Society. He
was also co-editor, feature editor,
and art director of The Full
Moon.
Kenneth has also received
several awards for his artistic
talent.
His hobbies include drawing
and film-making. He plans to at
tend UNC-Chapel Hill and go into
professional theater.
Laura Yost
As president of the student
council, Laura Yost was a well-
known member of the senior
class. During her high school
years she has not only been a
good student but she has also par
ticipated in many charitable
functions.
Laura has received many
awards for her scholastic prog
ress such as the DAR Good
Citizenship Award, Optimist Girl
of the Year-Nominee, Morehead-
Nominee, and Who’s Who Among
American High School Students.
As a member of the YMCA Youth
and Government Council, she at
tended a youth conference on
national affairs at the Blue Ridge
Mountain Assembly at Black
Mountain. She is also Chaplain of
the NHS and a member of the
Math & Science Club.
This year Laura has partici
pated in several fund-raising
functions. She rode 42 miles in the
Diabetes Bik-a-thon, and she par
ticipated in the CROP Walk-a-
thon for World Hunger. She has
also helped with the Special
Olympics.
Her hobbies include playing the
piano, and reading political
magazines. This summer Laura
plans to work at a summer camp
in the mountains, then in the fall
she plans to attend UNC-Chapel
Hill.
Chico Lilly
Chico? Well you can probably
find him on the football field, bas
ketball court, or even in center
field. Chico Lilly has spent all of
his high school years participat
ing in some kind of sport. He has
been on the football team for 3
years and has won 4 Player of the
Week awards. His positions in
cluded half-back and quarter
back.
Chico has spent 3 years on the
basketball team. His positions
were forward and guard. As cap
tain of the team, he helped them
to shape up a winning season. On
the baseball field, he is also a
captain playing center field.
Chico’s hobbies include both
watching sports and girls. Next
year he plans to attend Shaw Uni
versity.
Craig Cordes
Craig Cordes, his first year at
ASHS, has been a terrific exam-
Bond Marches On
The Albemarle High School
Marching Bulldogs began the
1980-81 season by playing at both
the home and away football
games, and at the United Way’s
fund raising campaign. They also
participated in two marching
contests at Central Cabarrus
High School and at Burns High
School.
During the Christmas season
the band marched in the Albe
marle Christmas Parade and in
the Salisbury/Spencer Christmas
Parade in which they placed
third in the competition. The an
nual Christmas concert took
place just before Christmas vaca
tion.
The highlight of the year came
when the band was chosen to
represent Stanly County at the
North Carolina Governor’s In
augural Parade in Raleigh.
During the spring several
students represented Albemarle
in All State and All County bands.
Among these were Mark Crisco,
Kathy Love, Susan Ledbetter’
and Laura Yost.
The next high point of the sea
son came when the band was
rated a high excellent at the
South Central District Band Con
test at Garringer High School in
Charlotte.
The band is set to end the year
by playing at the Stanly Me
morial Hospital dedication on
May 30 and the annual spring
concert on June 1.

the year Craig has been a valu
able player in sports. As center
for the Varsity Basketball team,
he helped the team win the sea
son tournament which carried
them to the finals. Craig has won
several awards including the All-
Conference Most Valuable Play
er, Second Team All-Piedmont,
and McDonald’s All American
Team-Nominee. Craig plans to
attend Western Carolina Univer
sity where he received a full
scholarship.
In baseball Craig played both
pitcher and first base. Craig was
also named Who’s Who Among
American High School Students
for his participation in sports.
Craig is not only active in
sports and school, but also in
church. He is an active member
of his church youth group and is
on the steering committee for
Teenagers with Alternatives.
His hobbies include golfing,
fishing, hiking, all sports (indoor
and outdoor), and “growing”!
Aretha Sellers
Aretha Sellers is extremely ac
tive in the Future Business Lead
ers of America. She is both Dis
trict FBLA Chairperson and
President of the ASHS FBLA
Club. In the District meeting, she
won first place in Public Speak
ing Contest.
During her junior year she was
secretary of the Future Home
makers of America. Aretha has
helped with the Special Olympics
for 2 years and is a member of the
Senior Choir.
Aretha attends the Ephesus
Church ->f Christ in Charlotte

youth group. She also sings in the
choir, is on the fund-raising com
mittee, and is assistant secretary
of the Sunday School.
Aretha enjoys singing, playing
the piano, and talking. She plans
to attend UNCC next year where
she will major in accounting.
Rod Ingram
Rod Ingram is an enthusiastic
student and band member. Rod
has been a member of the march
ing band for four years. He play
ed the trumpet and tuba. He was
also band captain during his ju
nior and senior years.
For Rod’s scholastic aptitudes,
he has been nominated for Gover
nor’s School twice, attended
SPEC, and was nominated for
Boy’s State. Rod was awarded a
scholarship to Pfeiffer. He was
junior class president and a stu
dent Rotarian during his senior
year.
Rod’s hobbies include skating,
swimming, working, listening to
music, and “Ros”.
Next fall he plans to attend
Carolina and major in business.
New Staff Members Chosen . . .
Crossroads ’82 Planned
THE I981-1982 YEAR BOOK STAFF
With the 1980-81 Crossroads
just recently completed, the new
yearbook staff has already begun
work on the 1981-82 yearbook. The
newest members have been at
tending workshops once a week to
learn about attractive layouts,
picture composition, picture
cropping, and- general termi-
nology. They have already
designed several layouts of their
own and are now working on a
theme and cover for next year’s
book. Under the supervision of
Mrs. Kay Dennis, the new staff
has started selling ads and work
ing on layouts for next year’s an
nual.
