Beach Blast
81-82
By MARY MOOSE
On Saturday, October 3,1981 the first annual “Beach Party” was
staged at the Stanly County fairgrounds in East Albemarle. Doubtful
parents expressed concern as the event drew near. Their main griev
ance centered around the possible use of alcohol and drugs at the fair
grounds. Since coolers were allowed, parents were doubly worried.
The Albemarle City Council was alerted and a special session con
vened to discuss the problem. After some deliberation council mem
bers advised the cancellation of the “blast” which had been scheduled
months in advance. The issue was then turned over to Stanly County
Superior Court, and acting upon Council request, Judge Charles Kivett
issued a restraining order to prevent the bands’ performance. Avid
support of the show was expressed by many area citizens; consequent
ly, the judge dissolved the restraining order which he had issued
earlier in the week.
The show went on, as previously scheduled. The five bands that
were contracted to play during the afternoon were Band of Oz, The
Showmen, Chairmen of the Board, Ocean Drive, and The Catalinas.
The “blast” turned out to be a tremendous success and provided hours
of entertainment of beach music and shagging.

Mrs. Martha Cowan, director
of the chorus department at Albe
marle Senior High, is antici
pating a great year. Present
choral activities center around
the planning of a Christmas con
cert. Participating in this event
will be the Concert Choir and the
Varsity Singers. The program
will consist of soloists, special
choreography, and a variety of
melodies.
Future plans for Mrs. Cowan’s
choral groups include a contest at
the University of North Carolina
at Charlotte, in which the Varsity
Singers will compete, and a
March contest, which will involve
the Concert Choir. Following both
competitions, the combined
choral groups will present a
“Classical” performance during
the latter part of March. This
production will feature contest
numbers.
Continuing in the spring, all
Albemarle Senior High choris
ters, along with the Albemarle
Junior High choral groups, will
entertain at a spring “pops con
cert”. In April, during the week
of Easter vacation from school,
the choruses will be traveling to
an undisclosed destination. (As
rumor has it, “The Big Apple” is
a likely choice!)
