Page 2 THE FULL MOON from the editor’s pen: TRIVIA??? We have come up with a great trivia question for you. Who are the 1984-’85 Stu dent Council officers? Unless you happen to be a member of the Student Council, you might find it rather difficult. The answer is below. President - Brandon Newton Vice-President - Lewis Bramlett Secretary - Evette Little Treasurer - Doug Smith Do not be too very upset if you could not name all (or even any) of the school offi cers. In past years, Albemarle Senior High School has installed its officers. However, Brandon, Lewis, Evette, and Doug have not been installed. Our Student Council is a microcosm of our government. Most elected government officials arev installed. These students, like their counterparts in the “real world,” deserve recognition. To be sure, they deserve installation. The fact that no installation service has been held has not stopped this year’s Stu dent Council from doing a good job — the homecoming dance was great! The heart of the problem seems to be that Albemarle Senior High School has had no assemblies whatsoever this year. If a student asks an officer about it, he usually attributes the lack of assemblies to the in formation he has been given: “the state school board’s decision that it would rather have students in the classroom all the time.” We can understand the state board of education preferring and perhaps even re quiring that time outside the classroom be quality time and have educational value. We could not possibly agree more. But, there are many components to a good edu cation and even more types of quality time. The Albemarle City School Board of Education has been supportive of both our students and our school. There have been few occasions, in fact, we can think of none, in which our local school board has not been in total support of any program that could be deemed for the good of the school or the students. We cannot imagine their counterparts on the state level feel ing differently. The administration of the school would also show support for a program which recognizes and gives credit to the students of our school. They have proven this time and again. This brings us to our final question. Co^ld a solution be found that is favor able to all parties involv^ so that our stu dent council officers can be installed? Do You Need Money For College? By GRANT HERLOCKER And JONATHAN HENSON On January 14, a financial aid program was held in the auditorium in order to in troduce and explain the Financial Aid Form (FAF) to parents of students who hope to attend college. Mrs. Jeneece Smith, Albemarle Senior High guidance counselor, and Dan Shive, representative from Wingate College, conducted the workshop. Students who do not have FAF papers may pick them up in the guidance office any time. There is no definite deadline for students who wish to submit their forms to the College Scholarship Service. However, students who feel they may qualify for the N. C. Student Incentive Grant, a grant pro gram for students from low income fami lies, must have their FAF information on file by March 15. Mrs. Smith urges all students to send their FAF in as soon as possible. She states, “Some colleges award money on something similar to a first come-first serve basis. The student who puts off send ing his FAF runs the risk of having the col lege say he qualifies for a grant or loan but the college has already committed all its funds to other students.” Mrs. Smith add ed that there will be some local awards of fered and that interested students listen for further information. THE COLLEGE SEARCH By GRANT HERLOCKER Choosing a college is most often one of the most important decisions a teen-ager makes. According to the College Board, an educational association specializing in ser vices for students and colleges, the best way for a person to choose the right college is to be organized and start the search as soon as possible. During the search for a college, a stu dent should remember that no single col lege promises to put anyone on the road to success. There are probably many col leges that meet personal and academic needs. Money, however, need not hinder a person from going to a college that is “right” for him. Most colleges are expensive, but a stu dent should not rule out a college he wants to attend because of cost. Although college ’costs have risen, and the amount of federal student financial aid has leveled off, there is still plenty of financial aid available. According to the College Board, a stu dent should apply for financial aid (grants, loans, and scholarships) immediately. You cannot get aid unless you apply.
