This year ASHS has gone through many
changes. One of such changes is the “mo
ment of silence” that is observed during
homeroom. The 1985 state legislature pass
ed a law that stated this procedure was to
be followed by all public schools. At our
school this period is usually about 30 sec
onds long. Each class is supposed to be
totally silent during this time. Mr. Morgan
has commented that students are comply
ing well with this new idea. The following
are opinions of students and teachers re
garding the “moment of silence.”
Paul Gaskin — It is a good idea. I think
about how I can make the day a better day.
Kyle Austin — I think it’s good because I
have time to prepare for the day.
Alvin Currie — It’s great. It allows peo
ple to pray if they want to. I pray during
this time.
Mrs. Ellis — I like it. It gives you time to
get your thoughts collected.
Phil Sheble — The moment of silence
giv.es me time to do homework and study.
Ms. Ward — I don’t believe in prayer m
school because it causes a lot of controver
sy and is sometimes abused. Howevei^
think the moment of silence is good be
cause of both relfgious and acadernic
reasons. It is a good way to get ready for
the day.
Beth Goodman — It gives me 30 seconds
of peace and quiet. „
Palmer Brown — It gives rne 30 extra
seconds to wake up in the morning.
Lisa Clark and Tonya Springer — The
moment of silence gives us a unique op-

^^Mr.^ Holcomb - It is a good idea. It gives
a person a chance to look at himself before
the day begins.
Jim Adams - What’s the big deal? It s
only 30 seconds of each day! It’s good to
have the time for reflection.
Mr. Morgan — I like the moment of
silence. It is a chance for students and
faculty members to reflect. I can see only
good coming from it. It is a time to ap
preciate life in general.
