Page 2 THE FULL MOON Features November 1986 Editor, ELIZABETH MURRAY Who’s the Biggest Turkey? ByANGELACOOK Well, it is almost Thanksgiving and what comes to mind on that day? Turkey! So students and faculty around ASHS have been asked, “Who is the biggest Turkey you know?” Mrs. Hathcock didn’t hesitate when this ponderous question was addressed to her. Immediately she responded with “Coach Bright.” Before she could explain, Kevin Gardner reinforced the sentiment by add ing, “All I’ve heard from him this year is a bunch of gobbling!” As this roving re porter next questioned our drum major, Lael Hoopes, he immediately responded, “Absolutely without a shadow of a doubt MR. HEDRICK!” Several other band members quickly chorused their agree ment, John Griffith, after pondering this unusual question for most of English class, finally realized the biggest turkey he knows is Charles Grigg, because of his morning “cackle” on the P.A. system. Questioning Mrs. Brown, she instantly re plied “Coach Holcomb, of course, because he’s so good at showing his colors! ” Wayne Pickier furthered the idea by saying “I can understand a turkey as well as I can Coach Holcomb.” Has Shannon Smith been studying dictatorships lately? It appears so because his quick answer was “Adolf Fast.” Jimmy Hays dissented with this opmion. “Adolfette” Fast is the biggest turkey he and the fifth period English class know. Just as Coach Holcomb and Coach Bright appeared to be winning this in famous title, an unidentified young lady nominated Eugene (Jamie) Kimrey as a “turkey” because, as she noted, his rear section looks much like a turkey. However, the football team finally convinced us that the biggest turkey at ASHS is the one and only J.G.”-Mr. Gibson, for reasons everyone should know. Being An American ByJENI HEDRICK With Thanksgiving ap- proaching, people are giving thanks for all their privileges, one of which is voting. A lot of flag- waving has been going around lately because of the recent elec tions. North Carolina even had two visits by President Reagan to help the campaign of Republicans. With all the political happenings so recently, each citizen should recognize and ap preciate being an American and being able to choose government officials. But what exactly does it mean to be an American? An American is defined as a citizen of the United States, and consequently tells us that a citizen is a “person who owes allegiance to a government and is entitled to protection from it.” However, these definitions do not fulfill the question of what it means to be an American. Being an American is more than a physical state of being; it is a state of mind and character. Often when people think of the great U.S.A., visions of baseball, football, hot dogs, and apple pies flash in their mind. But is this what it means to be an American? Hopefully not. If so, our nation’s future is in risk. A democracy is not a place for a sniug and self-satisfied citizen ship. An American votes instead of complaining about the quality of leadership in his country. An American respects the rights of others as well as his own. An American is not a bigot. An American never betrays the prin ciples upon which his nation was founded — freedom of speech, civil liberties, and human rights. Even though elections are over the mentality of being an American shouldn’t be put on the shelf until the next elections. It is a privilege to be able to vote and have a part in government.
