Wines Continues in
Pursuit of Morehead Scholarship
By ADRIENNE SOYER
ASHS is again fortunate to have an outstanding senior represent our school as a county
finalist for the John Motley Morehead Scholarship to Chapel Hill. Andrew Wines of ASHS
and Ruth Echols from North Stanly will compete on the district level for the prestigious
award.
In preliminary competition, Mariel Baucom, David Radford, Billy Joe Thomas, and
Andrew represented ASHS. Each of these seniors was interviewed by the local Morehead
Committee composed of Chairman Bain Jones, Mr. David Grigg, Dr. Carl Bowen, Charles
Brown, Sam Andrew, Patsy McNeill, Maurice Pickier, and Dr. Robert Gaither.
Candidates for the prestigious scholarship are chosen from high school students who
exemplify academic excellence and also contribute to their community and high school in
various activities.
Andrew is very active here at Senior High. He is currently a member of the National
Honor Society and of the Foreign Language Club. Andrew also contributes to the Junior
Civitans and enjoys basketball and soccer. Andrew will continue to compete for this schol
arship in December in the District interviews. If he is once again selected to go further into
this competition, he will then proceed to Chapel Hill for the state interview.

By MELYNEE MORGAN
The Superintendent’s Teacher and Stu

1987-88 school year were chosen on Novem
ber 5. Representatives, including students
and teachers from each city school, were
chosen to maintain open lines of communi
cation with the superintendent’s office. Se
lected from ASHS were Cameron Speight.
Chip Taylor, Keisha Wall, Robbie Adams,
Coach Holcomb, and Mrs. Baucom. This
committee, working in conjunction with
Mr. Morgan, meets with Dr. Cummings
periodically for luncheons followed by a
period of problem-solving. Last year's
committee worked effectively in directing
attention to problem areas within the sys

Welcome to
Mrs. Grigg
By KENDALL HOMESLEY
Mrs. Peggy Grigg is the newest member
of Albemarle High School’s math depart
ment. Her schedule includes geometry,
general math, and pre-algebra.
Mrs. Grigg attended high school at ASHS
and was an extremely active student. She
served as the first female student body
president of ASHS. Upon graduating from
high school, Mrs. Grigg attended UNCG.
Married to David L. Grigg, Mrs. Grigg
has two sons, David, who graduated from
ASHS in 1984, and Charles, who graduated
in 1987. Having two sons, Mrs. Grigg has
been active in the school system. Last
year, Mrs. Grigg served as an accom
panist to the chorus.
Because Mrs. Grigg has been a part of
ASHS for a number of years, she really
isn’t considered “new” but already a part
of our ASHS family.
