To Receive Diplomas

The 1988 graduation ceremo
nies will be held in the Albemarle
High School auditorium on
Wednesday, June 8, at 8:00 p.m.
The ceremonies will begin with
the traditional processional, after
which senior class vice-president
Melynee Kaye Morgan will give
the invocation. Dr. Bryce Cum
mings will then welcome the
graduates and their guests. Then
Melynee Morgan will introduce
this year’s special guest speaker,
WSOC’s co-anchor Ms. Meg Mac
Donald. Ms. MacDonald has been
co-anchor of the 6 and 11 p.ni. edi
tions of Channel 9’s Eyewitness
News since December, 1983. In
1985, Meg was named “North
Carolina Television Journalist of
the Year” by the Radio-
Television News Directors
Association of the Carolinas. Her
journalistic abilities have also
been recognized by United Press
International and the Associated
Press. After Ms. MacDonald s

dent speakers, who are senior
class president Jon Shannon
Fast, salutatorian Billy Joe
Thomas, and valedictorian An
drew Wines. After Mr. Wines’
speech, Mr. Morgan will present
awards and introduce the senior
choral students who will sing the
class song “To Everything There
Is A Season”. Diplomas will be
presented by Mr. Ronald Swan-
ner. Chairman of the Albemarle
City School Board of Education,
and Dr. Bryce Cummings,
Superintendent of Albemarle City
Schools. Senior class secretary
Angela Leigh Cook and senior
class treasurer Cynthia Rogers
Brewer will call out the names of
the graduating seniors as they
come forward to receive their
diplomas; Elizabeth Boyle will
serve as chief marshal at this
year’s ceremonies, assisted by
junior marshals Palmer Brown,
LeAnne Burris, Keith Byrum,
Paula Carpenter, Paul Childress,
Greg Harwood, Ward Misenhei
mer, Cresta Newton, and
Suzanne Smith. The organist for
the ceremonies will be Ms. Aza
Waisner.

Every year at graduation, se
niors are recognized for
academic excellence. Among
these honors are two prestigious
titles, valedictorian and
salutatorian, given to the top two
students of the senior class deter
mined by grade point average.
Valedictorian and salutatorian of
the Class of 1988 are Andrew
Wines and Billy Joe Thomas.
Andrew Wines, in his four
years at AHS, has excelled in
academics. His accomplishments
include being a Morehead
Scholar nominee and a National
Honor Society member. Andrew
also was a Foreign Exchange
Student in Germany. Andrew will
attend Davidson College this fall
and major in history.
Billy Joe Thomas has also
achieved academic excellence in
his high school career. Along with
Andrew, Billy Joe is a member of
the National Honor Society. He
also is competitive with the quiz
bowl team. Billy Joe, on his
Teaching Fellows Scholarship,
will major in education at UNC-
Chapel Hill.
