The Albemarle High School Marching Band, which has entertained everyone during halftime of

other bands, AHS band members rose to the occasion and presented their most exciting performance
ever. They received a Superior ratingof87, which was thehighestgiven at thecompetition. Therifles
and homline also received a first place rating.
Traveling to Newton-Conover High School on November 4, the AHS band was one of 26 bands
participating in the Southeastern Classic. During this competition, the band received its highest score
ever, an 89, and another Superior rating. The rifles, drum major, color guard, and drum line all

efforts in representing AHS during these weekend contests!
A "BADD" Alternative
By Shelly Austin
The B. A.D.D. Club is the newest club at AHS.
With 42 members, the club hopes to maintain a
safe, drug-free lifestyle. By sponsoring monthly
club meetings, speakers, and special events,
B-A.D.D. seeks to encourage personal under
standing and growth. They will also provide fuit,
drug-free activities for the school community.
B.A.D.D. was introduced to AHS students
during an assembly in October. Special speak
ers were the mother of two recovered drug ad
dicts, Joetta Clark, and a former student, Rick
Studley, who is now in a drug rehabilitation pro
gram. Both speakers offered insight into a life
that is dep>endant on drugs, with emphasis on the
family destruction caused by the ever-increasing
^eed for achieving greater and greater "highs."
Mrs. Jeneece Smith is the club’s advisor, and
she has high hopes for its success. The president
of the club. Yens Rueckert, hop>es to have a
^^^hnstmas activity sponsored by B.A.D.D. The
other officers who will contribute to the club’s
success are vice-president, Rosalind Garmon;
secretary, Latwana Lermon; and treasurer, Lisa
McKinney. The club is in the process of having
T-shirts and buttons printed. Their next meeting
IS December 11th, and they invite new members.
The AHS Band officers show off the many trophies won In recent competition.
Mrs. Smith discusses plans for
upcoming "BADD" events with club
officers Yens Rueciert and Rosalind
Garmon.

By Mesheka Davis
Christmas is just around the comer, and Albe
marle will kick off the season with its annual
parade on November 27 at 4:00 PM. Featured in
the parade will be AHS homecoming queens
Kesha Wall and Holli Brafford. Students from
the Vica, Deca, FBLA, and FHA clubs will
represent their organizations in the parade. Both
J.V. and Varsity cheerleaders will be there to
spread the AHS spirit, and the AHS marching
band will spread the holiday feeling through a
selection of Christmas carols.
There will be 20 different commercial floats
and displays from such entries as Chopper Nine,
Miss Stanly County, banks, businesses, and oth

Finally, old Saint Nick will be there sending
greetings to all. The parade will begin at the
YMC A pavilion. This event is sure to bring in the
holiday spirit for Stanly County.

Snyder, Richards Advance
By Tom Stubbs
On Sunday, October 29, Bill Snyder and Brett
Richards were chosen candidates for the John
Motley Morehead Scholarship. They were inter
viewed at the First Lutheran Church by a five
member board which was chaired by Mr, Charles
Brown. In the interviews, the nominees were
asked abouttheir goals and theirpersonal achieve
ments. Sixteen nominees were involved in this
local interview, including five from Montgom
ery County and eleven from Stanly County.
Montogomery students and Stanly students did
not compete against one another because one
candidate was chosen from Montgomery and
two were chosen from Stanly.
Brett and Bill are advancing to the South
Central Regional competition which will be held
in Pinehurst on December 19. In this semifinal
round of interviews, knowledge about current
events as well as personal achievements and
character will be the determining factors that
influence the selection committee’s decision.
We wish Brett and Bill the best of luck in their
pursuit of the prestigious Morehead Award.
