Attack of the Space Tomatoes
By Shelly Austin
Have you ever thought that tomato seeds
would travel in space? NASA sent tomato seeds
into space to stay for six years. They also sent
another set of seeds to South Carolina for six
years. After having both sets of seeds indifferent
climates, NASA will anxiously wait for the re
sults of an experiment by various classes of High
School students throughout the U.S.
The experiment is only done by classes who
requested to be a part of the experiment. NASA
distributed 180,000 kits containing space-ex
posed seeds and an equal number of earth-based
seeds to schools throughout the U.S. Two of Mrs.
Hathcock’s tenth grade English classes were
picked to conduct this experiment. Each is grow-
ing eighteen space tomato seeds in one container
and eighteen control seeds in the other. They
check the tomatoes three times a week to measure
their growth in weight and width. After each
plant has four true leaves they are transported
into individual containers to continue their growth.
The students are looking for possible mutations
of the tomato plant, such as change in fruit size
and color, growth rate, and leaf, stem, and stalk
shapes and sizes. The results gathered by the
students will be forwarded to NASA by June 15
for a final report.
Mrs. Harvey and Jennifer Rosltano

Sandy Buchanan and Julie BIggers transplant their seedling tomatoes.
