A Life Remembered By Meonne Blalock Never had Albemarle High School been filled with such an eerie sUence as it was on Monday, February 25. The expressive emotions on the students faces stood out beyond their normal hippy, energetic ones. No one had to say a word because everyone felt the same thoughts and feelings as they walked through the halls in a somnambulate manner. It was indeed written all over their faces, as the sorrowing lingered throughout the air. A special memorial was held in remembrance of a fellow student, Megan Cummings, who so tragically passed away Saturday night, February 23, in an automobile accident Megan’s example should move many people who take life for granted, only until the life of someone they know, love, or have feelings for is takeai from them, a bttle more seriously in the future. Sometimes it takes the loss of a life to enable one to realize that life is not a joke but something of great value which should be considered as a priceless gift. As the saying goes, sometimes things that are uncalled for do happen to the best of us, especially when we least expect them - lUce the death of a loved one. Although many friendships with Megan were cut short, the memories that were shared with her will only last as long as you let them ... FOREVER. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The Megan J. Cummings Memorial Scholarship Fund has been established to award a scholarship each year to a deserving senior at Albemarle High School. It is undecided at this time whether or not the scholarship will be awarded this year.or if it will be put into effect with the late Miss Cummings' graduating class in 1993, but the scholarship will honor a student who represents the best of the qualities of a student-athlete. Contributions to this scholarship should be made to the Megan J. Cummings Memorial Scolarship Fund, Home Savings and Loan Association, P.O. Box 489, Albemarle, N.C. 28002. Megan Cummings, with friends Suzanne Sharpe and MIml Austin, flashes her trademark smile. If you want to get aroom to meet all your requirements then you need to have a reservation made by spring break. To find a hotel, a list of what you want may be helpful. 1. Of course, it needs to be located on the Grand Strand. This is very important, and I emphasize very, because then it is not necessary to touch your car. 2. Room location in the hotel is essential. Some people, like Jennifer Windell, prefer to be facing the beach and others prefer to be facing the pool or street. Let price be your guide. 3. In most circumstances, the quality of a room is important. For graduation it is not as important as the price of the room. The cheaper the better. 4. Karen and Marcee require a king bed, MTV, refrigerator for refreshments, and, of course, a bathroom. 5. Shannon Scheble wants a penthouse free of that wonderful puke smell. It may be well advised to be familiar with the i di mm m m mm mm Beach Bash! Blak)ck hotel before renting it Sometimes the ads can be deceiving. Tom Stubbs’s room in the Bon Villa was supposed to be furnished with kitchen items. When he and his group arrived, the kitchen had 2 plates, 1 knife, and 1 fork. Also, the room was lighted by a light bulb suspended from a wire. In simple terms, the place was a real dump. On the other hand Chad Atwater highlyrecommends the LaRoca-Chadsays that his stay was great and he really learned how to have a good time. He and Damien Hudson had a week fiill of excitment and there was plenty of action at the La Roca. He recommends the La Roca because it has a very large refrigerator, queen bed, and a cold shower. When looking for a room, remember that extremely nice hotels require a large deposit to cover damages that vnll definitely occur. Also, ovCTcrowding a room can cause you to get thrown out of the hotel. Hurry up and get your group of people together and find that perfect beach spot Don’t let time get away from you and miss out on a great time. 000 0131 I Taoo ]aoo iooo taoo "No Vacancy" greets those with no reservattons! Are There Alternatives To College? By Susan Grantier The college question is one that goes through the minds ofevery high school student For many kids, there is simply no argument You graduate from high school; you go to college. Case closed, end of discussion. There is no better alternative, right? There is one problem, though. For many of us, the solution is not so clear. We have been raised to believe that you are bom, you go to college, you consequently get a high paying job, and then you die. But is that the path that all of us want to follow? What are the alternatives? Suppose you were given money to do with as you choose. Many high school graduates would take this opportunity to travel. Instead of going straight into college, numerous students feel they need to ‘live’ or ‘grow’ during this vital time of life. What better way to live or grow than to travel and see the world? Europe seems to be the main choice, considering the rich mix of nation alities and their versatile histories. Tramping aCTOSs Europe, one could easily "fmd” them selves. One senior said that she would like to “go to Australia and get lost’’. Students want to gain some freedom and independence before going on to school. Other worldly spots mentioned were Africa, Egypt, or the Philippines. But, as one student noted, “If I didn’t go to school now. I’d never go." This is a common fear among students (and their parents). Once they get a taste of the real world, will they bother to go back to school? Actually, it is all a matter of personal will and determination. Other students expressed an interest in obtain ing a job and earning some money before going on to school. But not just any ordinary job. “I think it would be great to work at Seaworld or something similar,” said one student “Differ ent" jobs such as theme parks, cruise ships, zoos, or environmental activities (such as the Peace Corps) were mentioned by many kids as jobs they’d like to have instead of going straight to college. Once again, these jobs were seen as outlets for personal growth and independence. The young adults of today have more debts and responsibilities than the young people of the pwst Our tastes are nrare expensive. We pay for our own cars, stereo equipment, clothes, insur ance, etc. For many students, graduation means we’re fmally able to get a full time job and start making some real money. But then again, will thisjobendupbeinganowinsituation? Asmore money is made, the bills will also increase; as many of us tend to over indulge when the money seems to be “rolling” in. Consequently, a person will stay in a dead end job situation simply to pay the bills.- It is important to seriously consider all of the options in front of you, and to look farther into the future. If a student is faced with a decision consider ing their future, a lot of thought has to go in to it. Talking to an okier person, whose opinion you respect, can help in the decision process. It also helps to get different points of view, from grand parents to close friends. Whatever decision • student makes, happiness and peace of mind should be kept in consideration. Life is impor tant
