MARCH 1991 THE FULL MOON PAGE 4 f?^'Bulldog Sports /|g2c2iSr^ EDITOR: MICHAEL BLAGG Hittin' The High Notes By Marsh Riggins and Courtney Brown Toumev Time The ACC Tournament is history and after a game that was a shocker to many, including the Duke players, UNC reigns as ACC champs. The ACC regular season championship came down to the final game where Duke met Carolina in the Dean Dome, with Duke taking the win as well as the number one tournament seed. That same Duke team did not show up at the tournament finals on Sunday. Duke could do nothing right and Carolina could do nothing wrong. At one point, Duke had seven or eight turnovers in a row. The Duke players seemed fragmented and unfocused. Apparently they lost their concentration early, if they ever had it, when Carolina came out ready to redeem themselves for two previous losses. Coach K didn’t help matters by getting a technical foul when Duke had just gotten the ball back aftera turnover. Carolina made the two technical free throws, then scored on their possession after a technical. Looking back, it seems this might have a turning point for the Blue Devils. Although they tried to fight back, none of them really played their usual game. Laettner tried to win it by himself and became so frustrated that he ended up getting a technical foul for running his mouth at the referees. However, let's give credit to Carolina. They came out hungry for the win, and their never wavered in their determination. Their defense rattled Duke and threw them out of their rhythm, aiKl Carolina was able to convert on the many turnovers created by their defense. Maybe this game will be good for Duke, as well as Carolina, as they move into the NCAA playoffs this week. BRBBP Poll of the Month March Madness is upon us. Yes, it is time for the NCAA Tournament. The collegiate basketball season is played mainly for one reason-to earn a birth in the 64 team tournament field. Tis true the road to Indianapolis is long and hard for the four teams to get there, but only the squads playing the best ball at the right time will be one of the four surviving teams envied by all. Of course UNLV is the pre-toumament favorite to be in Indianapolis, but a nationwide poll conducted by BRBBP Headquarters chose the next five most likeliest teams to make a presence in Indiana. Here they are with the number of votes in parentheses. 1. Ohio State (713) 2. Duke (601) 3. Indiana (588) 4. Arkansas (402) Hittin' It Off On February 20, 1991, the pitchers and catchers of the major leagues reported to their prospective training camps to begin practice for the '91 season. They were followed one week later by the rest of the players. These camps opened after a number of arbitration hearings on salaries to be paid, were held. It’s sickening to see the average salary go up every year, and the" big-time" players want more money every year too. Anyway, here are here are two of the “losers” (I don’t see how they can hardly be called this!) in their arbitration hearings; Barry Bonds (“loser"-$2.4 million), Bobby Bonilla (“loser”-$1.6 million),etc. J.R. ... and a Rookie? The Charlotte Hornet’s seem to have lost some of their “sting” here in the second half of the season. The addition of the “G-man” and the loss of Armon Gilliam have seemed to cancel each other out to produce a big ... nothing! Kendall Gill did, however, pick up the starting position at point-guard. This ousted “Mugsy” Bogues, much to the demise of some of the younger fans, and gave Gill the opportunity he had been waiting for. Indeed, he has been playing better in the starting position, but he still has a long way to go. At press time the Hornets were 18 - 42, which is better than ever before, but still not to their full potential. Going into the final stretch of the season, the Hornets will have to make a run to avoid haing the worst record in the NBA again. Denver has the honors for now. All A££ The ballots have been counted and the selections made for the all-ACC members of this year’s team. Kenny Anderson was the only unanimous choice and deservedly so as he was in the top 10 of all categories of ACC leaders. Christian Laettner and Rodney Monroe followed closely, lacking only one vote to be a unanimous selections. The number of votes fell off sharply for the next two players but the amount of talent didn’t. Bryant Stith and Rick Fox finished out the ACC first team. Chris Corchiani, after having a great year, was the leading vote getter for the second team. In any other conference Corchiani would surely have received more recognition but with the jrfay of Kenny Anderson, the N.C. State guard was overshadowed. "Days of Thunder" Again Dale Earnhardt appears to be at home again...at the top, of course! That's right, race fans, he’s leading the Winsttm Cup points already in the fifth week of the race season and has made strong showings including two wins on both the NASCAR and Busch National Race circuits! It looks like everyone will be in « familiar position with Eamhardt...playing catch up! Also The King is hiving a great year. After shunning tumors of his retirement Richard PeUy has been close in just about every race he’s been in. An exception to this is the race at Rockingham in which Petty crashed soon after the green flag was dropped. It's Gotta Be The Shoes By Shelly Austin As the weather gets warmer, it's time for the girls and guys to pull out those dusty running shoes. Both the girls and the boys have gotten off to a good start. There are several returning lettermen for the girls. Wyvonnia Hamilton is in great shape for the season. She is expected to finish at the top of the 110 high hurdle division, the triple jump, and be a team leader. Other returning seniors are Keely Francis, who is a middle distance runner, and Jeimifer Cook, who runs sprints and does the high jump. Camille Kluttz should shine again in both the discus and the shot put. The girls have many hopwfiils in sprints and distance. Courtney Rodgers, Elissa Freshley, Missy Cline, Angela Bowers, Marcee Vanore, and Alicia Swanner are this year's strong distance ruimers. The sprinters include Teneka Thomas, Reishana Morrison, Kidada Davis, Carrie Andrews, and Kim Thomas. The girls should have an impressive season. ^ The guys have also started impressively. Bill Donnally and Lashune Little had a great indoor season and are ready to do even better in the outdoor season. The guys have many returning lettermen as weU as new faces Their events are undecided, but the following will run well for the Bulldogs: Chris Lowder, Jack Linker, Dion Brooks, Matt Anderson, Tim Russell, Donnie Lummas, Brian Land, Jimmy Foutz, Robbie Bailey, Jonathan Perry, Jason Phibbs, K.K. Lawrence, Eliott Parker, and Courtney Brown. These guys look ready for action, don't they? Reishana Morrison gets a jump on the competition. Going; Going, Gone! By Michael Blagg Ah yes! Spring is here. Spring, the season in which a young man’s fancy turns lightly in thoughts of BASEBALL! Baseball is the only sport on the face of the earth where it is socially acceptable to grab one’s crotch and spit. The big boys reported to camp February 28, and the spring fever has sjjread to Albemarle as well. The manly men of Albemarle High School have come outside to play with their long sticks and balls - Ooh, what fun! Just who will be the mondo studs sla^^ing homers this year? The list starts with returning starters Brian Brown, T.R. Russell, and Eric Culp. Last year’s JV team that have moved up to varsity are Jeremy Talbert and Chris Huneycutt. With the pool of talent present in the halls of AHS, how can we lose? Prepare for grand-slams, R.B.I.’s arid possibly a state championship.
