Morgan The 1992-1993 school year will be a year of many new beginnings. On Monday, August 17, Mr. W. K. Morgan announced his retirement from education as the fwincipal of Albemarle High School. He had been principal at AHS for the past seven years. When Mr. Morgan became AHS’s principal on July 1, 1985, curriculum standards at Albe marle were very low. In 1985 there were fifteen sections of physical education, but only five stu dents in the one calculus class. Today, seven years later, there are only seven sections of physi cal education, but two calculus classes, three trigonometry classes, and two Biology II classes. These improvements are just a few of the achieve- By Natasha Byrd ments Mr. Morgan made while at AHS. In the past couple of years, attendance has reached an all time high of 94.3% and 94.2%. While at AHS, Mr. Morgan started a tradition of first- class graduation ceremonies. Another of Mr. Morgan’s achievements includes being named the President of the North Carolina High School Athletic Association last year. Albemarle High School was very proud of this honor bestowed upon him. Mr. Morgan set high standards for students. He was always encouraging the students to achieve at everything they did and to strive al ways for success. Swdents wUl always remem ber the enthusiastic morning announcements he Six New Teachers Come to AHS By Matthew Allison There are six new teachers at AHS this year, Mr. Akins, Mr. Rose, Miss Baucom, Mr. Tuzenew, Mrs. Harris, and Mr. Kidd. Three of the new teachers are coaches, as well, with Mr. Rose, Mr. Akins and Miss Baucom coaching football, football, and cross-country, respectively. Mr. Rose is a social studies teacher, with classes of Economic, Legal and Political Sys tems and World Geography. He is a graduate of Morris Harvey College. He is the Defensive Coordinator and outside linebacker and ends coach on the football team, and he also does the offensive line. He says that the team has good size, but the lack of depth may be a problem. He says that the team needs to take the season one Same at a time, because you can’t win the second Sarne until after you win the first one. Another new teacher and football coach is Mr. ^uis. He has three classes of Advanced Math and two classes of Geometry. He is a graduate of University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1989. He is the coach for the inside linebackers ®nd ruiuiing backs. He says the team's weakness ^ the lack of depth, but they have people who "'ill work hard to do what is needed to win. Miss Baucom is a teacher and the new cross Country coach. She has classcs of Biology and Find a Club and Get Involved! By Tina Lee Albemarle High School offers many different •ypes of clubs for all the different types of P®ople that attend this school. The clubs offered AHS are Foreign Language Club, History ^Itib, JuniorCivitanClub, Science Club, DEC A, FHA, FCA, BADD, VICA, Black Cul- Club and Pep Club. The Athletic Clubs ^clude the Monogram Club, Cheerleaders, and Maids. ”^e clubs at AHS are intended to incorporate **tidents and suit their individual needs and in- ®lude them in groups of people with the same ^•ercsts. You may not only learn about dif- ®^cnt subjects but also meet new friends. Clubs * ° plan and carry out service projects to im- the school or help the community. He always tried to leave students with the message of the importance of using all the educa tional opportunities available for them. Mr. Morgan would like to see the addition of ad vanced placement classes at Albemarle and the implementation of the health occupations. He was also very glad to see the Pep Club’s school spirit at the recent North Stanly football game. Mr. Morgan’s plans for retirement include spending time with his family and fishing. He plans to stay involved in education. Education has been his life and he will continue to support AHS. Albemarle will miss Mr. Morgan. We wish him a happy retirement and thank him for the time he spent with us. i Mr. Morgan's smile will be missed. Mr. Taylor Named Interim Principal By Natasha Byrd Physical Science. She is a graduate of N.C. State in May of 1992, where she was a Teaching Fellow. She majored in Science Education with a specialization in biology. She is a native of Al bemarle, and has had previous coaching experi ence with high school cheerleaders. Mr. Tuzenew is new to the high school, but many of our students will remember him from middle school. He was a teacher there for eleven years and also has experience at a school in New Jersey for one year. He is married, and has three children here at the high school, Marissa, 16, Sam, 15, and Marc, 14. He is a graduate of Pfeiffer College. Mrs. Harris is a new Enghsh teacher who has recently moved here with her husband from New England. Her husband's father went to this school. She is a graduate of the University of Massachusetts. She says she likes it better in the South because the people are so much more polite. Mr. Kidd is the new Auto Mechanics teacher. He enjoys helping students learn all the intricia- cies of car repairs. A native of Stanly County, Mr Kidd is a graduate of Central Piedmont Community College. Welcome to all new faculty members! Mr. Thomas Taylor has been named Albe marle High School’s interim principal. He has been at Albemarle for the past six years serving as the school’s vice principal. Taking over as the school’s principal is a big job; however, he feels prepared for the job because, “Mr. Morgan was a great teacher of vice principals.” Mr. Taylor has several plans he hopes to achieve this year. First of all, he would like to Mr. Taylor Is ready to take on the Job. mcrease the feeling of a sense of family at Albe marle. The AHS students and faculty should as a family support and help each other through the good and bad times. A sense of family could improve by helping new people, supporting school activities, being involved, and acknowledging and dealing with conflict The teacher/parent/ student survey done last year will determine some of the improvements that need to be made. Some results from this survey showed that 66% of the teachers disagree that there is evidence of high staff morale. A result from the student’s survey showed that 60% of the students disagree that students treat each other with respect. Mr. Taylor would like to see an improvement in this area especially. Right now Mr. Taylor is very busy learning the names of students. He would like to improve communication between the principal and the students. This relationship is very important to every schools success. Mr. Taylor is still in the stoge of coming up with ideas for this school year. He will meet many new challenges as the school year progresses. Congratulations to Mr. Taylor! He should prove to be a wonderful principal!! AHS Hosting Three Exchange Students By Christy Hendrick Kelly gets his dues In on time! This year Albemarle High School is hosting three foreign exchange students. Each student has left his or her home country for a year to study in the United States. Anna Joelson, is staying with the Ronnie Burleson family. Ashley and Andrew Burleson are her “sister” and “brother” here at school. She is 18 years old and is from Sweden. In Anna’s free time, she enjoys spending time with friends, going to youth camps, and viewing art. Aima says the biggest difference in the U.S. is the number of cars per family and the many rules of the schools here. Colin Pilz is also 18. He is from Germany and his hosts areMichael Laton and his family. Colin enjoys playing the cello, mountain climbing, and working with computers. Colin says the biggest difference in the U.S.is there are no fast food places in Germany. He admits McDonalds is his favorite fast food resturant in the U.S. Koray Leggio, the exchange student of Karen Morton and her family, is 16 years old and is from Switzerland. Koray says she is not home sick at all! She says the biggest difference in the United States is the driving age t)eing at 16. The Swiss have to be 18years old and it is a very hard process to obtain a driver’s license. Welcome to AHS, Anna, Colin, and Koray! Colin and Anna are enjoying life In the U.S.!
