A Fond Farewell to Mr. W.K. Morgan
The 1992-1993 school year will be a year of
many new beginnings. On Monday, August 17,
Mr. W. K. Morgan announced his retirement
from education as the fwincipal of Albemarle
High School. He had been principal at AHS for
the past seven years.
When Mr. Morgan became AHS’s principal
on July 1, 1985, curriculum standards at Albe
marle were very low. In 1985 there were fifteen
sections of physical education, but only five stu
dents in the one calculus class. Today, seven
years later, there are only seven sections of physi
cal education, but two calculus classes, three
trigonometry classes, and two Biology II classes.
These improvements are just a few of the achieve-

ments Mr. Morgan made while at AHS. In the
past couple of years, attendance has reached an
all time high of 94.3% and 94.2%. While at
AHS, Mr. Morgan started a tradition of first-
class graduation ceremonies. Another of Mr.
Morgan’s achievements includes being named
the President of the North Carolina High School
Athletic Association last year. Albemarle High
School was very proud of this honor bestowed
upon him.
Mr. Morgan set high standards for students.
He was always encouraging the students to
achieve at everything they did and to strive al
ways for success. Swdents wUl always remem

message of the importance of using all the educa

children here at the high school, Marissa, 16,
Sam, 15, and Marc, 14. He is a graduate of
Pfeiffer College.
Mrs. Harris is a new Enghsh teacher who has
recently moved here with her husband from New
England. Her husband's father went to this
school. She is a graduate of the University of
Massachusetts. She says she likes it better in the
South because the people are so much more
polite.
Mr. Kidd is the new Auto Mechanics teacher.
He enjoys helping students learn all the intricia-
cies of car repairs. A native of Stanly County,
Mr Kidd is a graduate of Central Piedmont
Community College.
Welcome to all new faculty members!
Mr. Thomas Taylor has been named Albe
marle High School’s interim principal. He has
been at Albemarle for the past six years serving
as the school’s vice principal. Taking over as the
school’s principal is a big job; however, he feels
prepared for the job because, “Mr. Morgan was
a great teacher of vice principals.”
Mr. Taylor has several plans he hopes to
achieve this year. First of all, he would like to

mcrease the feeling of a sense of family at Albe
marle. The AHS students and faculty should as
a family support and help each other through the
good and bad times. A sense of family could
improve by helping new people, supporting school
activities, being involved, and acknowledging
and dealing with conflict The teacher/parent/
student survey done last year will determine
some of the improvements that need to be made.
Some results from this survey showed that 66%
of the teachers disagree that there is evidence of
high staff morale. A result from the student’s
survey showed that 60% of the students disagree
that students treat each other with respect. Mr.
Taylor would like to see an improvement in this
area especially.
Right now Mr. Taylor is very busy learning
the names of students. He would like to improve
communication between the principal and the
students. This relationship is very important to
every schools success. Mr. Taylor is still in the
stoge of coming up with ideas for this school
year. He will meet many new challenges as the
school year progresses. Congratulations to Mr.
Taylor! He should prove to be a wonderful
principal!!
AHS Hosting Three Exchange Students
By Christy Hendrick
Kelly gets his dues In on time!
This year Albemarle High School is hosting
three foreign exchange students. Each student
has left his or her home country for a year to study
in the United States.
Anna Joelson, is staying with the Ronnie
Burleson family. Ashley and Andrew Burleson
are her “sister” and “brother” here at school. She
is 18 years old and is from Sweden. In Anna’s
free time, she enjoys spending time with friends,
going to youth camps, and viewing art. Aima
says the biggest difference in the U.S. is the
number of cars per family and the many rules of
the schools here.
Colin Pilz is also 18. He is from Germany and
his hosts areMichael Laton and his family. Colin
enjoys playing the cello, mountain climbing, and
working with computers. Colin says the biggest
difference in the U.S.is there are no fast food
places in Germany. He admits McDonalds is his
favorite fast food resturant in the U.S.
Koray Leggio, the exchange student of Karen
Morton and her family, is 16 years old and is
from Switzerland. Koray says she is not home
sick at all! She says the biggest difference in the
United States is the driving age t)eing at 16. The
Swiss have to be 18years old and it is a very hard
process to obtain a driver’s license.
Welcome to AHS, Anna, Colin, and Koray!
