Only 45 school days Waiting for! Four Assemblies Scheduled During March By Christy Hendrick This month AHS students will be treated to several educational assemblies. The first will occuronThursday,March 18,atoneo’clock. A group of mimes calledT ouch will perform for the school. A mime is a person who performs silent communication. The group originated in 1976 after meeting at a mime school in Florida. Since then they have jjerformed all over the eastern United States in hospitals, prisons, schools, uni versities, on the streets, theaters, and on televi sion. The members feel that mime can say what words sometimes can’t. On March 24. Mr Moran’s 5th period drama class will perform “The Night of the Living Beauty Pageant” by Tim Kelly. The play takes place in a midwestem city where two con artists put on their own beauty pageant in hopes of obtaining money. This class has been working very hard on presenting this production to you. On March 26. NHS will tap new members during sixth period.On March 30. Gil McGregor will be speaking to our student body. He is currently an announcer for the Charlotte Homets and travels around speaking to audiences about goals and success in life. McGregor has much experience as a basketball player. In high school he was coached by W.K. Morgan and went on to play college ball for Wake Forest. Next month, the 4th period class will present “Maximum Security Public High School”. This play portrays a group of valley kids who find themselves in a juvenile delinquent school. Join us in welcoming each of these perform ances to Albemarle High School. We are putting to gether activities and events that will increase students awareness on the dangers of alcohol/ drugs and driving under the influence. The BADD club is inviting Gil McGregor (announcer for Charlotte Homets) to kick-off the Prom Promise campaign! There will be a ^p rally with the band and cheerleaders supporting the campaign. Other guests wiU be a drug sub stance abuse counselor, speaker from the local M ADD chapter, and local policeman, David Hunt to answer questions about DWI’s. If the BADD club gets at least 85% participation from the students. Principal Taylor will spend the night m the press box!*!* Also to celebrate the commit ment from the students, there will be a “Festival in the Stadium.” There wUl be prizes given daily to a lucky student who signed the pledge for Prom Promise. On prom night all students are invited to auend a drug-free celebration located in the high school gym. Support Prom Promise and the awareness of alcohol and other drugs. Sign up dates: 4^7/93,4/28/93,4/29/93 Colin advances in musical competition By Natasha Byrd Albemarle High School is honored to have many talented students including foreign ex change student Colin Pilz. On February 27, Colin Pilz. a cellist, competed in the string section of the Women’s Club District Competi tion. Colin won this competition and now quali fies for state comp>etition in Winston-Salem. If he wins the state competition he will receive $125. In the District Competition, Colin played "Song Without Words" by Mendelssohn with the accompaniment of Mr. Holt on the piano. Colin looks forward to the state competition. He espe cially hopes to win and receive the $125 award. Albemarle High School wishes to congratulate Colin and wish him good luck in the state compe tition! !! Colin shows off his perfect form. Deppe Claims the Victory Joe shows off his winning bandmobile. By Leslie Morgan On March 4 in the AHS gym there was a rubber band car race. Each person could enter one “bandmobile”, a model car that was powered by arubberband. The objective was to build a car which, starting from rest, would undergo the maximum displacement parallel to the track. The car could be made from any material and could be of any size. The only power of the car could be one standardrubber band. Thecarcould not be launched with a rubber band powered slingshot The car had to be constructed to allow re placement of the rubber band in ten minutes or less. Each contestant had ten minutes on the day of the race to install a rubber band, given by the judge, and present the car for racing. The winner was Joe Deppe, whose car trav eled 18.7 meters. Jaime Dunn won 2nd place and Michael Laton recieved 3rd place. Trophies for the winners will be given out at on awards day. The first place winner received $20. the second place winner received $10, and the third place winner received $5. Thanks to all who participated in this event.
