APRIL 1996 THE FOOL MOON Bulldog Sports PAGE 4 EDITOR : APRIL BAILEY Sports Shorts by April Bailey NCAA-Firsi and second rounds of the NCAA tournament are final. UConn (32-2)madc it through both rounds winning over Colgate and East Michigan. Mississippi St. (24-7) also came out on top over Va. Commonwealth and Princeton. UConn and Mississippi St. will face each other in the Kcgionals. Ga. Tech (24-11) will go>iead to head with Cincinnati (27-4) in the third round after their wins over Boston College and Austin Peay. Cincinnati made the cut winning over Temple and UNC-Greensboro. The winner of the UConn and Mississippi St. and the Cincinnati and Ga. Tech games met for the second round of regionals in Lexington, Kentucky on March 22 and 24. In the West, Georgia (21 -9) beat Purdue and Clemson and will face Syracuse (26-8), who beat Drexel and Montana St. for the seed in the second round. Arizona will also move on to face Kansas, one of last year s Final Four teams. Arizona was victoriou! over Iowa and Valparaiso, and Kansas won over Santa Clara and SC Slate. The wmners of the two West games met in Denver, Colorado on March 22 and 24. In the East, UMass is heading up against Arkansas. UMass defeated Central Florida and Stanford to reach the third roimd. Arkansas won over Marquette and Penn State for their place heading for the Final Four. Texas Tech will also move into regional play after their wins over UNC- Chapel Hill and Northern Illinois. They will go up against Georgetown after defeating New Mexico and Mississippi Valley St. The winners of the two games will come together in Atlanta on March 21 and 23. In the Midwest, Kentucky and Utah are looking for a place in the finals after their victories in the first and second round. Kentucky moved to their position by defeating San Jose St. and Va. Tech. Utah also was a winner out of their games against Iowa S t. and Canisius. In the other bracket are Wake Forest and Louisville. Louisville beat Tulsa and Villanova and Wake Forest beat Texas and Louisiana. The teams making it to regionals will make up the Sweet Sixteen teams who will then fight for the Final Four and then on the the final game at East Rutherford New Jersey on April 1. VARSITY-Wesley Burris and Alex Lewder are doing well for the Bulldogs. They both scored two runs and had four stolen bases against East Montgomery. Justin Kimrey also had two runs against the Eagles. Charley Crawley, Steve Adcock, and Rufus Lefler all had one run a piece. They were defeated at the beginning of the sea son against South Stanly but improved their record in the game against East Montgomery with a winning score of 9-8. Their record now stands at 1 -1. The guys got sweet revenge when they defeated the South Stanly Rebels after their first loss to them. The Dogs won by a score of 6- 5. Winning pitcher against South was Travis Gaster. JUNIOR VARSITY-Thejunior varsity has had a slow start losing both to South Stanly and East Montgomery. Leading the Bulldogs are Andy Smith, Scott Brinson, and Josh Sides. All three have scored two runs each this season and are followed by Joey Johnson and Justin Burgess who have one each. They are looking for their season to brighten up and hope to improve theif 0-2 record. The team was unable to play South Stanly for the second time because of weathef problems will be made up later in the season. We wish the guys luck as they face East Montgomery in their last game of non-confef' ence play and their entrance into regular season. The boys' and girls' track team had their first meet of the season on March 14 hosting West Stanly, Salisbury, and West Montgomery. Both teams placed second under Salisbury. Salis bury's boys scored 123, whereas Albemarle had 84, West Montgomery 38, and West Stanly 24. Salisbury's girls earned 114.5 points, Albemarle 66.5. West Stanly 44, and West Montgomery 28. Cedric Baldwin placed first in the long jump and tripl® jump. Cedric also ran on the 4x 400 meter relay team along with Saladine Peets, Mondarius Henryi and Trelis Edwards which placed first. Also, the field events TmYi Harrison threw first in the shot put. Although, neither Saladine Peets nor William Ycskie have ever nm hurdles in a meet, they both placed first in their events. Even though it was Peets's first meet, he placed first in all three of his events. The girls had three firs' place finishers. Eloise Odom qua] ified for region' als in the 1600m run and the 3200m run. Also winning was the 4x100m relay team consisting of Shawna Euto. Tiera McDonald, Yashica Wall, and Nikillya Clark. The Bulldogs hosted their second meet of th® season Monday, March 18. Teams that attendeJ were Sun Valley, West Davidson, and North Stanly. The boys placed second behind Sun Valley losing by only five points. The girl* finished third in the meet. First place finishers for the guys were Cedric B aid win in the triple jump- Saladine Peets in the400 meter run, and Williar’’ Yeskie in the 3(X)m hurdles. Winning girls were the members of the 4x200 meter relay teani consisting of Tiera McDonald, Tammy Dormsi'- Yashica Wall, and Nikillya Clark. The team's next meet will be April 2 South Davidson.
