improve the library.

Allen Named Principal at AHS
by Kelly Rakes
We welcome Mrs. Allen, our new principal
at AHS. Mrs. Allen, who has served as assis
tant principal here for the last two years, is well
known to our students and faculty. She was
chosen from a number of applicants by a com
mittee that included three faculty members,
two school board members, and Dr. Church.
Her experience at this school was a postive
factor in her selection as principal. Mrs. Allen
has been involved in education for over twenty
years.
As a mother of two children, Mrs. Allen
realizes the challenges that deal with teenagers
and running a high school, but she is ready for
the challenge even though she will be forced to
give up teaching English at night at Anson
Communtity College. Although there will be
great changes for Mrs. Allen, she said, “I never
felt like a stranger here, and I’m looking for
ward to such a challenge.” Mrs. Allen feels
that AHS is a “good atmosphere,” especially
because the teachers are trying to work with
each other and the smdents. Mrs. Allen plans
to be visible and associate with students, par
ents, and teachers and make AHS have an
atmosphere where everyone feels relaxed and
comfortable.
Welcome, Mrs. Allen!
Mrs. Allen is the leader of tiie
AHS Bulldogs.
Four Students' Experience a "Fun" Summer School
by Allison Hudson
During the summer of 1996, four of AHS’s
students who are academically inclined and tal
ented attended Governor's School, a six week
enrichment prograin.
Connie Edwaius, James Monroe, and Gary
Her attended the Governor's School West at Sa
lem College in Winston-Salem. Mike Bryan
attended Governor’s School East at St. Andrew’s
College in Laurinburg. This summer program
began on June 23 and ended on August 3.
Each of the four students had some great
things to say about their experience at Gover
nor’s School. They all said that they enjoyed the
summer imensely. Mike studied social sciences
and said that he learned a great deal of new
material. He had a great time going to the band
concerts and playing on the intermural volleyball
and basketball teams. Connie enjoyed all of her
classes. Some were about philosophy and others
were about fractals and complex algebra. Con
nie’s best experience while she was at Gover
nor’s School was attending the Masquerade
Ball. Cormie md all cl her fric ids dress«i up as
the characters from the mo^ic, ease. Lonnie
was Sandy. James studied social sciences and
thought it was great to learn so many new things.
He said that he enjoyed hanging out and playing
basketball during his time away from the books.
Gary enjoyed his art classes and had fun in his
spare time playing basketball and volleyball. He
loved hanging out in the art room with his bud
dies; one of his major accomplishments of the
session was learning to eat twelve scoops of ice
cream in fifteen minutes.
We commend you for spending over half
of your summer “in the books.” However, it
sounds like you had plenty of fun, too!
