DECEMBER 1996 THE FULL MOON Bulldog Sports EDITOR; RUSTY STORY PAGE 4 i Ule Belieued! by Rusty Story The Albemarle football learn entered the first round of the North Carolina 2A football playoffs on November 15. The Bulldogs played host to the Ledford High Panthers on this cold Friday night. The Panthers came into the game ranked tenth in the state 2A polls. The Bulldogs came out of the locker room fired up and ready to take on the obstacles that the Panthers would have for them. Albemarle jumped out to an early 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter. This fast start would prove to be the spark the Dogs needed to advance past a tough Ledford opponent. Eddie Wall intercepted a Ledford pass and returned it to the twenty-five yard line. This play would set up the first score for Albemarle. The drive was capped off by a two yard touchdown run by Desmond Green. That would be the first of Green’s two touchdowns. Wesley Burris had another outstanding game for the Bulldogs at quarterback. He threw for 243 yards and three touchdowns. Speedy Ingram caught 146 of Burris’s yards. Travis Gaster caught two touchdown passes. Jonathan Dry helped lead a defense that shut a very potent offense down in the first half. The Bulldogs ended up on top with a 28-26 victory and an invitation to the second round of the playoffs against the Thomasville Bulldogs. The battle of the Bulldogs could possibly be Albemarle's toughest competition of the season. Thomasville came into the game ranked number one in the state and the defending state champi ons. Albemarle jumped out to a quick start once again in this game. They grabbed a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter. This would prove to be the game winner in what came to be a defensive battle. Albemarle’s defense, led by Greg Nahra- gang, kept Thomasville off the scoreboard. This marked the first time in fifteen years Thomasville had been shut out. The final score was 7-0 and the Greg goes for the big tackle! Name That Stadium? by Bo Andrew Most football stadiums have names in refer ence to an unbelievable alumnus or coach. Since our stadium does not have a name, we asked some of the students at AHS to come up with some names for our stadium. Read and enjoy! Albemarle’s third opponent of the post season would not gel any easier. The Dogs traveled seventy-five miles to rumble with the Rams of Starmount. Albemarle was the first to take the field in the newly formed “Bulldog tunnel." This was started by the parents and students of the Albemarle community. ThcRamsjumpedoutlo the early lead in this game. The two high- powered offenses were not easily stopped in the first half. The Bulldogs went in the locker room at the half with a 21-14 lead over the number three ranked Rams. The Starmount defense somewhat kept the Dogs out of the end zone in the second half. Anyone at the game knows what I mean by “somewhat." Starmount’s Rams won the game and ended the season for the Dogs. Albemarle finished up 12-2 on the season. The players would like to thank the fans for their support. This is a season that will not be forgot ten. Congratulations, Bulldogs !!!! “flthlete of the Month" by Bo Andrew Speedy Ingram poses after receiving "Athlete of the Month" for December. Dwayne Ingram, better known as Speedy, ranks high among the Bulldog athletes and has been selected as Athlete of the Month for December. Sjjeedy was an important part to the YVC championship team this year. Not only was he a star wide receiver, he was an inspirational leader among his peers. Despite the Bulldog’s loss to Starmount, Speedy had one of his best games of the season. He had 180 yards on 7 catches and made all three of the Bulldog’s touchdowns. He also sur passed the 1000 yard mark for the season. This feat earned him a spot in the 1000 yard club. Speedy was a vital pari of the Bulldog offense, and he will be dearly missed next season. Now that football season is over. Speedy will jump right into basketball. Hope fully he will have the same success in basket ball that he had in foolball. Congratulations and good luck Speedy! Taking It To the Hoop by Heather Freshly Basketball season has arrived. Now we all know that while watching the guys' basketball team, you’ll see fast action, dunking, and three- pointers, but you can see just as much action by watching the ladies’ basketball teams. Coach Corl, the J.V. girls basketball coach, believes this group will have a successful season. “All players are hard working, full of determina tion, and ready to play some ball.” This team consists of Denise Hedrick, Jo Sikes, Allison Horton, Catherine Hinson, Stacie Lambert, Sarah Phillipy, Chastin Lancaster, Carmen Baldwin, Alicia Hill, Renita Hinson, Leah Poole, Eliza beth Smith, Stephanie Holt, and Jamie Hard wood. Coached by Bob Johnston and assisted by Christy McConnell, the ladies' varsity team is eager to show that practice makes perfect, well almost This year’s team is composed of seniors Abbey Kimcry, Ton Ridenhour, Kate Mabry, Heather Freshly, and Toni Harriman; juniors Shekia Wall and Amber Perry; and sophomores Tammy Dorman, Charlotte Phillipy, Crystal Swaringen, and Holly Kopp. For the time being. Abbey is out with a hurt knee, a big loss to the team. TTie coaches are impressed with the lead ership of the seniors and the new attributes con tributed by the underclassmen. While express ing a multitude of talent, this team will be ex tremely successful if they can put it all together as a team; however, it is going to take a whole lot of hard work. When the intensity level picks up, the Dogs will be able to rise to the higher level of competition. Best of luck to both the J.V. and varsity teams!
