Ellen Gettinger, daughter of Tony and
^arcn Gettinger, has been named the
''alcdictorian for the graduating class of 1998.
Although Ellen has managed to make exceptional
Shades, she has also volunteered in many clubs
®nd been active in sports. She is a four-year
'^tterman in tennis and a three-year all-
'^onference player. During this past tennis
^*^ason, Ellen placed third in theNCIISAA state
|ournament in doubles. Mer academic honors
'iclude National Honor Society, Optiinist Girl
the Year, and a Scholastic Gold Key for*rt
Achievement. She will be attending North
Carolina State University in the fall as a
Prestigious Park Scholar, a scholarship and
^firichment program with a value of over
^40.000. Ellen has been accepted to the school
design and will pursue a degree in graphic
'fcsign.

f'iano lessons for eleven years and received a
^holnstic art award. Stacy was also a member
the Quiz Howl I'eam which won the county
championship. After high school Stacy will be
attending the University of North Carolina at
Chapel Hill where she plans to major in physical
science

Mr. William H. (Bill) Grigg will be
the honorable speaker at the 1998 Comencement
Ceremony.
Grigg, former Chairman Emeritus of
Duke Energy Corporation in Charlotte. North
Carolina, is a graduate of Albemarle High School
and received his bachelor of arts degree in 1954
from Duke University. After serving two years
in the U.S. Marine Corps, Grigg retumed to Duke
University Law School where he earned a bach
elor of law degree in 1958. He served as editor-
in-chief of the Duke Law Journal from 1957-
1958.
Grigg practiced law in Charlotte for
four years prior to joining Duke Power in 1963
as assistant general counsel. After many pro
motions, he was elected to the company’s board
of directors and its executive committee. In April
1994, he became chairman and CEO. He was
named Electric Utility CEO of the Year for 1995
by Financial World magazine.
Grigg is a director of Hatteras Income
Securities Inc., Nationshund Inc., Associated
Electric and Gas Insurance Services Ltd., Coltec
Industries Inc., The Shaw Group, and the Char
lotte Mecklenburg Hospitality Authority. He is
chairman of the Foundation for the Carolinas’
board.
AHS Athletics
Receive the 1998
Wachovia Trophy/
Cushwa Cup

The Albemarle High School Athletic
Department is proud to announce that AHS is
the winner of the Yadkin Valley Conference
1998 Wachovia Trophy/Cushwa Cup. Each con
ference in North Carolina has a recepient of this
prestigious award; however, the YVC trophy is
also called the Cushwa Cup, named after a leg
endary football coach from Thomasville High
School. Sponsored by the Rotary Club in
Thomasville, the trophy is valued at over $600.
The trophy goes to the school who places the
highest in each conference sport. Placing first
gains the school 11 points, second place gains
the school 10 points and the points assimilation
continues correspondingly. The following sports
received 11 points for their first place finishes:
men’s soccer, men’s tennis, golf, and women’s
track. 1 he other teams’ standings are placed
beneath the pictures on pages six and seven. AHS
won the trophy with a total of 149.5 points.
Coach Gaster traveled to the Rotary
meeting in Thomasville to repre.sent AHS and
receive the award. Congratulations to all the ath
letes who represented AHS so well in all of their
sports.
