The Mountain Trail December 2, 1958 r* r-> \ \y LbbA/b TH^ SALE OF CHPJrTI^.S Since 1907 when the first Christinas Seal Sale was organized, this plan of raising money for the Tuberculosis Fund has been in progress. We should get a big thrill from buying these seals, as there is one death every seven and one- third minutes caused by tuberculosis, r'jid this money goes to help combat the disease. Thirty years ago tuberculosis was re sponsible for eleven out of every hundred deaths, while to-day it is responsible for only five out of every hundred; but the death rate could still be reduced if the necessary fimds vrere available. Since Robert Koch announced the discovery of the germ which causes tuberculosis and especially since Kiss l^mily P. Bissel cond\icted the first Christmas Seal sale in the United States in 1907, the germ of tuberculosis has been fought. The Christinas seals have on them a double-barred cross, a symbol of the VyTorld-wide fi^ht against tuberculosis. This is the thirty-second yeir the Christmas Seal Sale has been in prog ress, so let’s rifike it the biggest one we have had. Since the whole aim of the sale is to help cure persons afflicted with tuberculosis, we shoiild all think about how many lives v;e might save through the purchase of these seals; therefore let's all get the spirit of cooperation and buy a ’’whole lot" of Christmas seals. -Margie Trailer. ORIGIII AlTD OBSERVMCE OF THMKSGIVING Thrjiksgiving is, in the United States, a day set apart annually and appointed by the President of The United States rjid by the Governors of the various states as a day for giving thanks to God for the favors and mer cies of the past year. It is a harvest festival and ov/es its origin to the Pilgrim Fathers. Despite the poor har vest of the summer of 1620, Governor Bradford set a day of Thanksgiving and rejoicing .after the scanty crop had been harvested. This example of sturdy faith spread to the other Hew England colonies. In the course of the Revolu tion Congress frequently recommended days of Thanksgiving and Prayer. After the close of the war many of the states adopted the custom of an annual day of Thrjiksgiving. There was, however, no certain date for holding thi^ festival. President Lincoln in 1863 appointed Thursday, August 6, as a day for Thanks giving, but since ,1864, the last Thurs day in November has been observed as the National day of Thanksgiving, Louise Burnette. 0
