Dec. 30 - Rudyard Kipling was born,
Edvmrd Jenner was born at Glouces
tershire, England, May 17, 1749. He
was still very young when he went to
Sodbury, where he was to study for six
years with a group of doctors.
While Jenner was still studying in
Sodbury, a peasant woman came to him
for medical advice and happened to
mention that she could not take small
pox, for she had had cowpox, Jenner
could not forget the peasant v/oman’s
ViTien he had finished his course,
he went to London to study under the
great physician, John Hunter. Hunter
and Jenner were always great friends.
One day Jenner told Hunter of his
wishes to start smallpox vaccination
by using cov/pox. Hunter urged him to
really try the experiment. His first
experiment was a success.
The vaccination spread quickly*
The royalty of Yfales approved it. Two
of the Presidents of the United States
used it. People in Europe wanted it,
Napoleon had his soldiers vaccinated.
People in Spain sent out expeditions
to spread its use. The Queen of Russia
said that the first child vaccinated in
Russia should be supported by the public.
Vaccination for smallpox had proved
a success. Before it came into use
thousands died with smallpox each year.

Red Cross Christmas Stamps
The Fifth Grade sold more Christmas
stamps than any other grade-.or room in
the school, "VVe sold 1000 stamps. The
money goes for the care of patients
who have tuberculosis,
The Fifth Grade Chapel Program
The Fifth Grade gave a play, "Billy
Brown’s Christmas Stunt.” The charac
ters v/ere: Leon Potts, Eldon Miller,
Earle Yoimg, Martha Richardson, Eugene
Gibson, Tfayne Hicks, Mildred Crunklo-
ton, Maggie Talley, Bobby Rice, Dora
Hedden, Edwin Norton, Betty Speed,
Morris Calloway, Angela Anderson,
Eugene Edwards, Francis Hedden, Jean
Keener,Edith McClure, Elizabeth Talley,
Edith McCall, and Thomas Chastain,
There were two scenes of this play,
and betvreen the scenes, there was a
poem "Jest ’fore Christmas."

James Johnson has to be absent until
after Christmas, Vie are very sorry that
he has to miss school,
Roy Johnson also has to be absent.
His sister has the measles,
Earle Young is leaving for Florida
Saturday, IVe are going to miss him.
