The Mountain Trail April 28, 1959 * BOOKS The first written works were pictures drawn on stones. These were first made by the Egyptians. Later the kings of Egypt and Babylonia were very careful to have records of their great works made. Prayer and hymnbooks were written by the priests. Later people began to write poems, proverbs, histories, cook books, and fairy stories. There were also sto ries about the bravery of their heroes. Those were carved in clay and allov/ed to dry. Kings preserved great libraries of these books. The Greeks wrote beautiful poems and prose. V/hen the Romans captured Greece they read much of the literature. As time passed the Romans wrote their own v;orks, which are still appreciated to day. During the Middle Ages these books were preserved in monasteries where the monks patiently copied the books by hand. Slowly these old books were forgotten and neglected. Then Petrarch, a great Italian poet, hunted out the books and had them printed. All of Europe read them. As the printing press had been in vented by Gutenberg, more people could read these books. People learned how to read and write. This was called the "Re vival of Learning," To-day our country has many public libraries from v/hich people can get books. They can be bought at a very low price also. Our school books are loaned to us. To-day practically every one can get books to study and to read. The world of today has advanced from a few clay books to many paper books. -Nancy Potts THE AGES OF TIfffi Four different ages in which our an cestors lived were: The first age was called the Old Stone Age, This was because the men used stones v/hich they found for their tools. The second age was the New Stone Age, when people learned to pound and grind off tho rocks to make their tools. Copper was the first metal used but it was too soft. By mixing copper with tin it became durable enough to make tools. This was called brorje. The third age, then, v/as the Bronze Age, The Middle Ages - the next to come - saw the beginning of serfs. This was also the time when the King had every thing as he wished. The Middle Ages lasted for one thousand years.
