At this time I am also not unmindful of the splendid cooperation of Mrs.H.G. Story and the staff throughout the en tire year. Lot us continue striving to get ’’The Mountain Trail" to as high degree of perfection as possible. -L. C. Nix April 28, 1959 A NOTE TO GRAD^TATES Since.we are graduating from high school, some of us perhaps will vrant to enter college next September. We shall do well to heed four sign-boards on the college highv/ay. The first one is:HAVE A RE^^ERENCE FOR lOJOl’XEDGE. Have a re spect for learning and a deference for the ’’Masters of those who know. " Coney Island is expected to know the names of Jesse Jai>ies and A1 Capone, but a college student is expected to know Shakespeare and Milton, Steinmotz and Darv/in. Not to know the great pioneers of knowledge is to argue oneself lonknown and unknow ing. College is not the place for peo ple who do not want to study or learn. The maximum of good from a college course goes only to those who have a de sire to knov/. /mother sign is:FOSTER RELIANCE ON SELJ’, T'hatover weakens a man’s trust in his CAvn knowledge weakens him# In a col lege you will meet with some difficulties. Do not ask assistance of a teacher or fellow student until you have grappled with the problem yourself. The mind is strengthened by exercise. To rely on another is to stunt and check the growth of your own reasoning power. Do your ovm work and reasoning, also reach a conclu sion. Another sign to bo heeded in a suc cessful college career is: ACQUIRE THE !u\?J.T OF PROMPT DAILY ROUTINE TASKS. Character is not made by a single act but by a continuous series. Repetition mrikcs a hard task easier. Many books have boen v;ritton on how to study and many students complain that they do not knov/ hovr to study or to learn. There is just one preTicription for this; the faithful performance of regular daily assignments. Both learning and character are built through the establishment of a set of habits. If you go to an institution vrhoro you intend to specialize in something, the fourth sign-board is: LEARN ALL ABOUT THAT IN v'liiCH YOU' SPECIALIZE AND SOME THING ABOUT ALL THINGS. One who knows
