Martha Crosby of San lvIateo,Fla., affectionately knovm to her friends as ’’Grandma'*, passed her 98th birthday an niversary very happily at the Crosby summer home on Fifth Street last Thurs day. A number of close friends and neigbors called during the day to extend congratulations and to leave flower and candy, while a number of others who did not call sent tokens of remembrance, Ifrs. Crosby is the former Jliss Martha Webster Alden, a descendant of John and Priscilla Alden; the eighth generation down. Mr* and Mrs, J. H, Shith of Na-shville, Tenn., are at their home,Clermont, on Satulah Mountain, and have as their guests Mrs, Smithes uncle and two aunts, }J[r, and Mrs, Henry Schoolfield, of Mul lins, S, C,, and Mrs, R, B. James of Dan ville, Va, J, R, Mobley of Atlanta has leased the H,W. Barnes summer home on the Walhalla Road for the month of August, Mr. Mob ley’s daughter, Mrs, Sims Bray, of Atlan ta and other members of the family will be with him during the month. Dr, L, D, Little of Thomasville, Ga., arrived last week to spend some time with his family who are vacationing at their summer hone in Webbmont. Mrs. A, J. Salinas of Augusta, Ga,, is at her beautiful home, Kalallanta, for an indefinite stay. She has as her guest her cousin, Arthur de Vaughan, also of i^gusta. Guests of Miss Marguerite Ravenel last week were her nephew. Dr, William Duane, a noted neurologist, and his friend,Lee Allen, of Philadelphia, Dr, Duane is one of the founders of the Highlands Museum and Biological Laboratory and Visited both while here. He is especially inter ested in the work being done at the lab oratory this summer, and brought down a number of fish tanks which the workers have found very useful for their aquatic specimens. lir, and Mrs. W,A, Hays entertained their recent guests, Mr, and Mrs, C. J, Good man with a picnic supper at Cliffside Lake, Mr, Hays and Mr, Goodman were room mates at North Carolina State College and members of the Havmiian Music Club, Dr, and Mrs, A,R, Harold had as their guests last week Mr, and Mrs,M, L,Haines of Miami, Fla., who were on their way to visit relatives in Carmel and Indianapo lis, Ind. This was I-Ir# and Mrs, Haines’ first visit here, and they wore very much pleased with the place. THE CHURCHES OF HIGHL/.rDS Highlands offers a choice of four churches to those who wish to attend services on Sunday. All of those churches are located on 1‘Iain Street and a short distance from the center of town. Going west on Main Street one comes to the Methodist church, a white building close to the sidewalk, on the south side of the street. This is the newest of the churches* having been built about a quar ter of a century ago.
