The Mountain Trail Pastes September 29,19^9 My Community Our mountains are beautiful and they guard us from floods and other terrible things. The scenery is very beautiful at all times of the year. The climate is moderate all the year and in the cjummer many people cone here because the v/eathor is so comfortable. Usually cold weather in the winter does not last long. The size of the town is small - about 1500 in the summer and about 600 in the vin/nter. Highlands is a tourist town. The man who discovered ;md set tled Highlands was a Mr. Kelsey. The plan that the first settlers 1-id out for town is' a simple and convenient one, since all the streets lend into the main one. There are advantages and disad vantages in living in a mountain ^*egion, such as ours. The chiof ' disadvantage is that there is no industry that insures all ti-ie Gmploymont to our people, but we can overlook this disadvantafre when we stop to consider our bless ings, those things that are real advantages. The very fact that fountains are hero surrounding us, to protect us from high winds and floods, gives a sense of security* Security is again given us in the f'act that all modern means of Communication arc provided for - such as good roads, telephones, and the telegraph. We are made comfortable by the ^se of electricit'", Our wator sup - Ply protects our her 1th, sinco the ^atoris purified. There are many other advantages that we could mention, such as churches, schools, thertor, and Parks; but we have said enough to let our readers knov/ that wo are ^appy 6n our community. -Neville Br:;son o THE SIXTH GRADE Our Library In the Sixth Grade we have a library which contains a number of interesting books. 'Ve also have a number of dictionaries, light globes, and encyclopedias, ’^^e have place on our shelves for ink ond glue. ’Vo have a shelf on which to put tJie books that we do not need in our desks. We have magazines on our shelves. We have a very nice library table, too. -Jean Keener Gifts from the Old World We Sixth Graders are studying about the Old '’^orld. They did many things that seem very funny to us. If a man knocked out another man’s tooth, he would get his own tooth knocked out. If a man broke another man’s bone, he would get his own bone broken. Wo all made something that was used in the Stone Age. Some of us mado stone axes; others made potter We found that the Greeks gave us mrny things, such as vases and v/ri ting. -Peggy Potts The Sixth Grade is having a club to help keep order in the room. The name of the club is the "O.C.C.” For certain reasons v/e would rather the public would not knov; what that means. Wo elect ed the followinp* officers: President Barbara Zoellner; Vice-president, Bobby Rice; Secr»etary, Martha Richardson, We also elected a gen eral captain, who is Pegr:y Potts. The general captain with the help of the other captains tnke names and help keep order. In the Highlands School vre have m-'‘ny new students. In the Sixth Grade we have Peggy Potts, v;ho has "one to private school for five years. We also have Virginia I.Iae Collins from a school in Texas.
