Whatever happened to the old-
fashioned Christmas when families
gathered to exchange gifts, eat
turkey dinner, and enjoy each
otherfs company? I often hear
older people speak of those old-
fashioned Christmases. They talk
about what a ceremony they made of
decorating the Christmas tree and
hanging the holly and mistletoe.
What fun those sleigh rides were
with everyone bundled together to
keep warm, and gailv laughing and
singing the songs of the season.
How good those old kitchens must
have smelled with the rich aroma
of nuts, brown sugar and cinnamon,
and fruit cake slowly baking.
Oh, to have an old-fashioned
Christmas I
T
With the coming of the holiday
season a festive spirit not often
equaled is instilled within the
heart of most everyone, young or
old.It is a feeling of joyfulness
and gaiety which comes oniy once a
year.
Christmas is a time to be happy
Our worries should be pushed asicfe,
and a carefree attitude characte
ristic of the season should be
assumed.
This carefree attitude is one
which is difficult to assume in
the face of adversity. ”What
adversity?’^ you may ask. I'll tell
you. The most adverse condition
which faces the American student
today--WOHKl More specifically,
homework.
Picture this if you can. A
beautiful, stately,equisitely dec
orated Christmas tree ' beneafeh
which lies an array of gifts of
every shape, size, description,
and decor. Beside • all this sits a
child, frantically searching and
opening every package which bears
his name. This youngster should
be the picture of happiness and
contentment. But wait I There*s a
flaw in his countenance. A small
line of worry creases his youthful
forehead.
Why this unhappiness? Because
the poor dear has to spend his
vacation doing homework. Research
of some sort to be done, a term
paper to be written, a book to
read and report to make: all this
must be completed before the new
year and school.
Teachers, I beg you, be consid
erate. We, as students, have had
a long hard semester. We need a
rest. Many of us deserve a rest.
Please, give relief to the masses.
Be tender....
