FTA REPORTS ACTIVE YEAR The Future Teachers cf America of West Mcntpomery are enjoying an active year under the sponsorship of Mrs. Cot ton. The aims cf the club are to pro- mcte interest in the teaching profession araong^ high school students and to sup port the wishes of the teachers in order that their tasks may be easier. Member ship is limited to those in the junior and senior class who are definitely planning a career in teaching. In the past months the club has par ticipated in various ways to reflect its goals and responsibilities. During the week previous to the Thanksgiving holi days, members of the FTA provided re freshments in the office for the teach ers. The faculty was again honored at Christmas, The FTA treated ■ them with Christmas cookies and carols. Eight members of the group were for tunate to be invited to assist in the pre-school clinic activity at Troy Ele mentary School, These students were se lected on the basis that they are plann ing a career in elementary education. The girls obtained practical experience in that they were responsible for the children in the first grade v;hile their teachers attended a meetinn to meet the parents of their prospective students. Each reported that this experience was most reqardinr. April is celebrated as Teaching Ca reer Month, In recognition of this fact, the club plans to place bulletins and pamphlets on display in the library, A bulletin board will also be prepared for the front hall. It is hoped that through these displays, students will better un derstand the purpose of the club. As in previous years. Career Day will be sponsored by the Future Teachers, This year, however, it is planned that Career Day will be held at West Montgo mery on a school, rather than a county- wide basis. Another change which will be evidenced this year is that the en tire student body will be invited to at tend the barious lectures. In the past this has been limited to sophomores and juniors. During Career Day members of the Future Teachers will be on hand to aid students in locating their lecture A -.greeting committee has also been organized to act as guides for visitinr speakers. LESSON COMPLETE - - by Linda Saunders A bock is opened, A page is turned, I began to study. I’m drifting alon;^ in a half-dream half-real world of the brillant sights and sounds of United States history. The next paragraph, I am very aware, is a most important one--one that would make an excellent topic for discussion on a Pop test—one that con centration must be applied to—one that I must know sc well that I could close my book and then repeat the words I read. The quietness within my room reaches her enchantful yet alarming hand outward toward me. Her fingers seem to bring sereneness and placidness to the room around me. I hear not a sound. The quietness seems to tingle in the air. The peacefulness that passes over me is welcome but obstruse and absurd. I know I must read my history. I know I can not close my eyes. Yet, my eyes feel heavy and I begin to nod. I try to open my eyes, but somehow they seem to be barred. Boom! A crash sounds through my room. It sounds as if an enormous explosion is rocking the whole world. I do not open my eyes because I am dreaming a beautiful dream. I am dreaming of my Sir Galahad, my knight in shinning armor, and my one and only Prince, In my dream one could find me at an elaborate ball dressed in silks and satins, but in the ugly yet truthful world of reality cne would find me don ned in an ancient pair of bermudas and a white blouse, I seem to be asleep. On the floor beside my chair lies a book with the bold letters United States history. my lesson has been completed for tonirht.
