Although the Albemarle High
School IS one of the most progressive
in the state, it has not as yet a live
organization of “The Shifters." Of
course there are many girls and boys
in these parts who carry out the
creed of The “Shifters” in letter and in
Spirit, but the students as a body
are still unorganized.
The iRoyal order of The Shifters
was organized by a group of high
school girls "in New York City, first,
to provide new sources of pocket
money, and secondly, in order to keep |
up the spirit of the old, familiar
schoolboy game of “pass it.” Both
young and old are pledged as mem
bers of this organization, but shift
ing-has its greatest popularity among
high school students.
Anyone desiring zo become a mem-
ber of “The Shifters” will pkase
Obey these instructions:
1. 'Squeeze the juice out of one
pokeberry, and, using said juice as
ink, copy with a chicken feather, on
a piece of goat skin one inch square,
the obligations of “The Shifters.”
2. After requirements of Article
1 have been fulfilled, take the goat
skm and place it, hairy side down, in
one of the large yarn cases found on
the platform of the Wiscassett Mills
Company, located in Albemarle, Stan
ly County, North Carolina.
3. Wrap the aforementioned yarn
case in seven layers of rotten cheese |
cloth and ship by insured first-class
mail to Dona Maria Luisa Pie de Con
cha, infant son of Queen Petrovitch
Nyegosh, at Ekaterinoslav, on the
small island of Tserytsyn, N. €., who
will translate your promises into
the language of the Caesars and with
in five years after date of receipt
will return them to you, together with
brass paper clips for badges.
The obligations of the “Beneficial
Order of Shifters:”
1—Oath
I, , being desirous of
membership in the “Beneficial Order '
of Shifters,” do solemnly promise not
to divulge the secrets to anyone not
a member, and to try to get as many
brother and sister members as possi
ble, without regard to race or pre
vious servitude, and to obey the grand
Kleagle and all other members pres
ent for the next fifteen minutes.
2—Name
“Beneficial Order of Shifters.”
3—Purpose.
The purpose of this order is trree-
fold, namely:
1- To get all you can,
2. To get something for nothing.
3. To do others before they do you.
4—Signs
Countersign, “Check.” High sign
"Handshake.” ’
5—History
Adam and Eve were shifted out of
the Garden of Eden.
Moses was shifted into the bull-
rushes and out again.
Alexander shifted everyone until
there was no one left to shift.
Napoleon shifted the blame of the
loss of the battle of Waterloo.
In fact, shifting is becoming more
and more popular amongst its mem
bers.
6—Mystic Sentence.
The whole order is summed up in
one sentence—“The Mystic Sentence”
