MAGAZINES AND DAILY PAPERS, - ■ THE MIDGET , FRUITS, CANDIES AND COLD DRINKS THANKSGIVING—1621 ('Continued from Page One.) “Pm so glad,” chimed in Jane, pull ing back the cover. “I’m going so excited pyer, the football game thi^ afternoon.. It’s the biggest game of the; seasonrand there’ll be oodles of people .there.’"’ . , The two girls lapsed into a silence that was unbroken except for +he church bells that were calling the people to church. The hour drew near for the service to begin but the greater majority of the people had, like Mary and Jane, forgotten to ' answer the call of the bells. Mr. Sirnpson, their pastor, went to his pulpit with a heavy heart. He looked over the scattered con gregation and his eye did not fall U'p- on even one young person in the en tire group. The first strains of the beautiful hymn, “Come, Ye Thankful People, Come,’’’ werf, floating from the choir, when the music was overwhelmed by a great clamor on the outside. A large procession was streaming past I the church. The cars were decorated, ! the g'rls flaunted ’their colors and ; the boys were blowing horns. The 'bar.d struck up a lively tune and all made their way to the athletic field. The great game was about to begin. 'Such is the spirit shown now for the holiday which every American o'b- I serves. But where is the truly thank ful s'irit which was displayed in 1621 ? AIBEMARIE HIGH SCHOOL HAS i ■' ' MANY ADVANTAGES. (By Sam J. Horton.) Albemarle High iSchool is one of 'he best high schools in this section of North Carolina. This may seem to be an exaggeration, but let us consider a few of its outstanding advantages. During the last year an addition has been made to the already large building. In this addition we have ■six rooms. The superintendent’s of fice a^ong with the library occupies one of these. Another is occupied by a modern, thoroughly equipped science room and laboratory, a new addition ' in this high school, and the students seem to be very enthusiastic about 'the work they are to do there this year. This year the study of Spanish h.3s "been added to f'e surricn'um. Now a modern lan^’uage course is offered, ?nd Latin is no longer a drawback, for one need not take it unless he wishes. The old EUib'ecls also are taken up in a new a'^d more in'^er- esting way. T7e have a 'arg? stereopticon and frcm t me to time certain 'parts of the lessons are made clearer and are emphasized by slides, and by discussions of the pictures f s they 2re thrown upon the screen. The faculty Ihis year is almost en- ‘ireiy new and among its members have 'Scme of the best teachers in the state. This is a sign of advance ment, for a good faculty is necessary for the growth and welfare of a h'gh school. No high school is complete with out its Home Econon:ics department and Albemarle Higih \Schcol admits cf no superior In this course in the surroundifig counties. We have this year a new teacliiir in charge o' DELIVERED TO YOUR DOOR The Stanly Nevv^s-Herald, your home newspaper, is printed [wice a week.
