SHALL MEREDITH BE MOVED The topic of the day anto»i{f Meredith girls, and intersted outsiders, is that of moving Meredith College. The general opinion among the students is that we would better ourselves in numerous ways, while a few are adverse to tliis idea. Whore and when this plan is t» materialiw is yet to be decided upon. Neverlbeless, we readily understand the ad vantages to bo gained by that one step. In the first place, we arc sadly in need of larger grounds, which i.s an essential prere quisite to ftu-ther developments. This wouUl give us a chance to “spread” in more than one way. If we had larger groimds, we could then meet the problem of taking care of the number of girls who apply for admission each year, for theii we would have space to build the several dormitories needed A spacifius and beautiful campvis appeals to the eye, and what catches the eye, soon becomes dear to the heart. This would give to each girl a greater desire to improve and and beautify her college grounds. No one wishes to expend time, money, or energy upon a fruitless iir{)ject. Besides mooting the rooming ((ueslion and arousing a sense of l>ride, larger grouiuls would moan a place of health, and a place of pleasure for the ■rii’lS; Walking would no longer be confined to side walks and the Wake Surest Road where we are critically observed by the public eye. Some of our entertainments would be most effective and delightful on a wide lawn, instead of forever depending »ipon the chapel, society halls, aiul the “Y” voom. With ex- tcjisive grounds wo could increase onr ath letics, adding to o\ir tennis and basket-ball courts, and not feel guilty of trespassing upon public opinion, when drilling iu out- iloor gymnasium classes. Having s'eui‘od ample room i^)r our lo cation, the next consideration is the build ings, The d(‘|)loi'able need of dormitories has already been mentioned. It is useless to enumerate the necessity of such buildings as the gynmasiiuii, infirmary, nvusic hall, li- l)rary. chemistry building, laundry, etc., etc., ad infinitum, A college with a Mei-edith rep- utati(ni and standard claims the right of being properly e((uipped. Posse.ssing suitable buiklings and grcmnds, we would not live through I bat critical mimieut, nor bo seized with an aj^ologetic chill when we are await ing Ibe fii-st expressions of the stranger who stands viewing Meredith. Those are merely a suggestion of the bene fits to be derived from the removal of Mere dith. Lot \is now review the minor objec tions. Those who want Meredith to remain crowded upon one, small, city block, and be deprived of opportiuiities for improvement and advancement, contend that Meredith would not be Meredith if located elsewhere. To allow Meredith to I'emain fixed iu the same site is like trying to make a modern girl wear an Elizabethan costume; for our college has grown in nutdorn ideas, and at tained liigh standards. Why then siiould we stunt the natural develo|>mont of oiiir college? Another absurd idea of the adverse party, is that we would be utterly cut off from the outside world; that we would not have the chance to go down town -shopping and to the movies as often as we do now;'that we would probably have Sunday Scliool and Church iu iiur own chapel, thus not being able to mingle with the town people and accept their hospi- (ality. These statements are true to a cer tain degree, but if such eluuiges are neces sary for the improvement and progress of our college, shall the individual become a stjnnbling block by as.suming this selfish at titude? The question continues to be a daily topic for conversation at the dituier table, on the halls, in afternoon walks—and oven Wake Foi-est ai)poars vitally interested, A well- known professor was heard to say that “other colleges build iu stone and concrete, but the Bapti.sts arc character builders,” We are proud of such a genuine statement, but we cannot got away from the jn-esent needs ol' Moredil l^and hei- daughters stand loyal. ready, and willing to promote the welfare of thoii- Alma Mater.
