The moon glim mered faintly through the rifts in the clouds that scudded across its face. Shadows played over the ground. The wind moaned eerily among the branches of the trees that bent and swayed. sighing of unrequited promises niade by vagrant breezes. The water broke monotonously on the shore. Lights on the mainland seemed to disappear and then appear again, glowing mistily. • To Stanley Richardson who sat on a log and gloomily surveyed his sur roundings the scene seemed jiiat about as dismal as his life did then. He had come out in his motor boat to get away from the whine of the city and to think. Why did things seem to go along so nicely and then one little thing send them crashing in to chaos? Frances had seemed to like him and he had been on the verge of asking her If —oh—well—but that crazy Jim my Grant had come butting in. Of course he knew that she liked adven ture. mystery and excitement but he didn't understand how she could go back on a fellow she had known lor years and become so utterly fascinated by that boy! That boy that so inno cently told stories about smuggling and ruin running and sttiff and always one by the name of James Grant was the brave one, the fearless, the hero. Stanley suddenly thought he would hire some rum runners or some thing to kidnap him, vanish him from the face of the earth. Then, she would see. Through the fog It seemed ghostly, weird, uncanny. Nearer and near er it came To be continued ]>KA('ONS >VI> VIO’l'OKY H. Y. W I. lULLV DAY SUCCKSS (.C'oiitimied from page one) leaped in the shadows at the foot of the hill. A united raid was made on the store of Marshmallows which had been generously provided. Much fun and laughter, a great deal of excite ment but few mishaps accompanied the toasting of Marshmallows over the coals. More yells and singing left every one with that comfortable feeling which makes everything look rosy, and with a growing recognition of the important place which B, Y. P. U. holds on the Meredith Campus. At General Assembly at 6:45 some interesting Information was given about B- Y. P. U. work In a series of talks on “How to win the Loving Cup” and on the Study Course soon to be given. Competitive yelling between unions did much to raise any spirit which might still have slumbered, and the individual unions retired to their separate meeting places for discussion of this weeks topics.
