We find the arti cle Chee7'fiilnes3 Necessity For Success ful Work. It reads thus: The girl with drooping lips and frowning eyes Is never the one to win the scholarship medal. Contentment is certainly a necessity for successful work in any line; especially la this true for college girls. The mind will not work when the heart is discon tented. A cherful heart is the founda tion for a cheerful smile. It is the hap py countenance that wins friends most easily. It is the girl with friends who is happiest, and it is the happy girl who does the best and most conscien tious work. Cheerfulness is always worthwhile in a pupil because the amount of work accomplished depends largely upon the attitude of the pupil. The Watchtoicer, Wesleyan College, Macon, Ga., advocates laughter. It agrees with Dr. Welsh that laughter is a means of cultivatlong a Pollyana- like gladness, a sweet disposition, and a cheerful appearance. Headlines in paper “Make Pin Money.” but Rebecca Llebman says that’s too “pricky” a job.—The Ro- Uinda—State Teachers College, Farm- villc, Va. In The Spokes^nan, Greenville Wo mans College, Greenville, S. C., we notice that “Sara Slang” has been tried, found guilty, and sentenced to death. The rest of us would be doing a good thing If we would help to bury “Mr. Slang.” Durham Dec. a.—Of the greatest im portance to the medical world is the discovery by Beaumont S. Cornell, fel low of Duke University, that by eat ing one one-half pound of calf liver a (lay the «liseasc of Pernicious Anemia can be curt-d. A book on the subject has been prepared hy Dr. Cornell, and it is now with the Duke press of pub lication. Following the death of J. B. Duke, the oflicialH of Duke University became intensely interested in the eradication of this disease which had wrought so much havoc in the world, and which had been directly responsible for the death of Mr, Duke. As a consequence of this interest Beaumont S. Cornell, M. D.; M. R. C. S.. L. R. C. P., (Eng.) was appointed a fellow by the university to search out a cure for the disease. Up to this time Pernicious Anemia had proved fatal to those afflicted. The remedy as proposed by Dr. Cornell seems quite simple. Transfusions of blood, drugs, and other methods had been employed but to no purpose. Had Mr. Duke known of the cure for his affliction, he would probably have lavished a large portion of hla enor mous fortune on the discoverer. The discovery has cost Duke University thousands of dollars, but It represents one of the greatest contributions made to medical discoveries in the past fifty years. Already orders are being received by the press for the book by Dr. Cornell, and much praise Is being given his work by the medical pro fession. THE SHEPHERD’S WATCH Map: Williams The night is still save for an echoing wind, And man lies sleeping midst the dem ons of sin. The soft clouds move restlessly, about in the sky, Hiding the stars now and then as they drift swiftly by. The moon through the veils now to the earth shines down On shepherds crouching sle'e^ly on a cold wet ground. Heavy are their eyelids and weary are their souls, As they tighten their garments and hide their faces in the folds. And a faint star-light Is cast on the huddling groups, Then they drift to sound sleep as the watch-hounds whoop. Disturbed are the dogs and restless are the sheep, But fatigued with worry the shepherd men sleep. Suddenly they wake and look up In dismay At beholding a light, far brighter than day. Trembling and oroucliing they fall hard on the sand. And bury their faces in tlie palms of their hands. But soon they are moved by an Angel’s holy word, And they marvel In reverence the thing they have heard. Angel voices ring out and All the empty earth. And man-kind kneels to the Saviour’s holy birth. SDIPLICITY ITSELF EVEiMNG Matilda HoliJ2jian When twilight comes, and in the sky The moon glides calmly like a shep herdess, Leading the stars, her straying sheep, Across the quiet meadows of the sky, And far beFow’ among the hilJs, The lights of a small village twinkle forth, The white spires rise through the trees In the pale light It gleams, a slender shaft. And far above, like ponderous giant forms sleeping town The dark, grim mountains stretch mysteriously Majestic sentinels who guard the At Evening. Friend: Have you solved the prob lem of intimating to your daughter's callers that it is time to go home? Modern Mother: Oh yes—it's no trouble at all. Promptly at twelve o’clock I turn on the living-room light from the upstairs switch. Now comes the story of the couple who were married in an airplane and lived happily ever after. FREE!
