LUNCHEON PROVES
(Continued from preceding page)
of your daughters and the best of
your high school graduates to your
Alma Mater — and furthermore,
even to the supporting with every
fiber of your being the Expansion
Program). In testimony of which
and as evidence that you have ful
filled all requirements prescribed
for that degree, this diploma is
granted, and the fingerprints of the
Executive Committee of the
Alumnae Association are affixed.
Dated at Meredith College, Ra
leigh, North Carolina, this Alumnae
Day, Reunion Year 1945.
Attested by Marguerite Mason
Wilkins, President; Mae Grimmer,
Executive Secretary, and Winnie
Rickett Pearce, Toastmaster.

per cent active membership) 1915,

per cent to 60 per cent active mem
bership) 1905, 1916, 1917, 1918;

Special awards to classes were

the Class of 1905 in recognition of
their fortieth or ruby anniversary;
a book to the Class of 1920 for the
highest percentage of active mem
bership among reunion classes; a
book to the Class of 1909 for the
highest percentage of active mem
bership among the non-reunion
classes; a special award, a book,
to the Class of 1920 for having
reached their 100 per cent goal for
active membership in the preceding
year.
The singing of the Alma Mater
ended the luncheon activities.

mittee were Mary Farrior Baker,
ex ’23, Hester P. Farrior, ’18, and
Minnie B. Farrior, ’14, co-chairmen;

Bernice Brinkley, ’41, Louise
Combs, ’41, Margaret Nash Hester,

Pauline Patton Wood, ’24.
ALUMNAE HOLD MEETING
(Continued from preceding page)
be found elsewhere in this issue.)
All officers, incoming ones and those
whose terms had not expired re
peated the pledge of loyalty.
In the absence of the chairman,
Anne Simms Haskins, ’31, the re
cording secretary read the report of
the Obituary Committee, a tribute
to the memory of the following
alumnae who had died since the last
annual meeting:
Juanita Williams Nicholson, ’09.
Myrtle Hair, student 1934-1935.
Gaynelle Sorrell Wooten, student
1933-1936.
Isabelle Gulley, ’04.
Edna Earle Bradsher Bullock, ’16.
In the forum on the Expansion
Program led by Mabel Claire Hog
gard Maddrey, ’28, the conclusion
was reached that although alumnae
were often the nucleus of the Pro
gram in various areas, they were
not so enthusiastic and cooperative
as they could and should be.
Mr. Hadcock, director of the Ex
pansion Program, spoke briefly of
the progress and the good will grow
ing out of the work. He presented a
college plate to Region One for sur
passing its quota in the drive.
After a brief introduction of
visitors in the assembly, a gift from
the Association to the College, a
check for $2,100 for the Swimming
Pool Fund, was accepted by Presi
dent Campbell. Other gifts included
a gavel for the Association and a
large mirror for the Faculty Parlor.
Attention was called to the serv
ice flag of thirty-two stars, one of
them gold. In recognition of the
work done by these alumnae and
others serving as Red Cross Work
ers, Army Hostesses, and Camp
Librarians, the assembly rose while
the list of names was read.
Meredith Granddaughters, pre
sented by their mothers, totaled
twenty. Introduction of the officers
of the club was made by Margaret
Long, president, daughter of Mrs.
Annie Smith Long of Shelby. Ruth
Hall, daughter of Mrs. Bessie Staun
ton Hall of Lillington, served as
page, and other members of the
club ushered for the meeting.
“Transformation” by Winter
Watts and “Take Joy Home” by
Carolyn Bassett Wells were sung by
Miss Beatrice Donley of the voice
department, accompanied by Miss
Phyllis Warnick of the piano de
partment. Following these selec
tions, Mrs. Farmer spoke on “Mere
dith College and the Women’s Mis
sionary Union.” Mrs. Farmer
showed that the two are bound not
only by the graduates of the college
who are leaders in the Woman’s
Missionary Union but also by the
similarity of their purposes. “We
should come to a fresh appreciation
of the value and realize that as we
seek to build up our College, we
are helping to forward our Master’s
Kingdom,” she said. The alumnae
were impressed by her appeal to
spare neither prayer, time, thought,
nor purse to the Expansion Pro
gram.
After the singing of the Alma
Mater the meeting adjourned.
