Sports Review

Meredith and St. Mary’s Col
lege played hostess to repre
sentatives from eight other
colleges who came to participate
in a state-wide playday last Sat
urday. Those colleges represent
ed were Duke, Peace, Greens
boro, Woman’s College, Guilford,
Brevard, Mars Hill, and E.C.T.C.
Activities were held simulta
neously at both hostess schools.
In tennis, Duke took both the
singles and the doubles tourna
ments. There were two swim
ming meets, each of which had
six events. St. Mary’s won event
one, the crawl for speed. Peggy
Patrick won the second event.

remaining four events were won
by St. Mary’s. In the second
meet, Duke tied Woman’s Col
lege for event one and took event
two. Woman’s College took
events four and six; Mars Hill
tied E.C.T.C. for event five,
while Peggy Patrick won the
third event.
The archery tournament was
very close. Jean Griffith ran a
close second to the winning
Woman’s College. Meredith won
both the singles and doubles in
badminton.
Six volley ball games were
played. Duke won three games.
Peace one, Greensboro one, and
Peace tied Greensboro for the re
maining game. The hockey
games proved to be one of the
most exciting and competitive
activities of the day. Woman’s
College beat Guilford 3-0. Then
Guilford took the game from St.
Mary’s 2-0. Meredith then beat
St. Mary’s 2-0 and tied Woman’s
College 1-1.
After the different games, all
of the girls met in the Hut for a
social hour, at which time scores

N. C. BAPTISTS CONVENE
Meredith was represented at
the North Carolina State Baptist
Convention in Asheville this
week by Dr. Carlyle Campbell,
president, and Mrs. J. E. Miller,
field secretary.
were given and the winners were
recognized. It is estimated that
two hundred girls participated
in the day’s events. Playday is
planned as an annual occasion
and the obvious success of Satur
day’s activities should serve as
an incentive for future planning.

EDUCATION CLUB MEETING
The Education Club held its
second meeting of the year on
Tuesday evening, November 5
at 8:00 in the Hut. There was
a short social hour preceding the
meeting at which time songs and
refreshments were enjoyed by
all present. The Club had as its
special guest Miss Kay, an ex
change teacher from England,
who is now teaching the first
grade at Hayes Barton School.
Miss Kay discussed “General
Education in England” and the
“Education Act of 1944” which
was outlined to give England
better education by providing for
underprivileged children at some
length.
BARBER SCIENCE CLUB
The Barber Science Club met
Tuesday, November 12, in the
Science Building. Miss Helen
Parker, a new faculty member,
gave a lecture on the “Nutrition
of Myxomycetes.” Miss Parker
told of her work at Chapel Hill
in experiments with myxomy
cetes. After the program cider
and donuts were served.
MACDOWELL MUSIC CLUB
The MacDowell Music Club
held its second meeting of the
year Wednesday evening, No
vember 6, at 7:30 o’clock in the
Hut. Dr. Benjamin Swalin, di
rector of the N. C. Symphony,
was the guest speaker and gave
a very interesting talk to the
members. The meeting came to
a close with an informal “ques
tion and answer” period with
Dr. Swalin about the N. C.
Symphony.

FREEMAN RELIGION CLUB
The Freeman Religion Club
entertained as their guests the
Religious Education Society
from Shaw University Friday
night, November 15, in the Hut.
The two groups took the sub
ject of Protestantism as their
basis for discussion, and several
topics under the heading “What
must the churches of today do
in the light of their nature and
their task?” were presented by
students from Shaw and Mere
dith. The following questions
were brought up:
1. What is the church up
against in its environment?
2. What is the church up
against in itself?
3. In the face of these things,
what really is the church?
4. What are the distinctive
marks of Protestantism?
5. What then must we do
about our churches in making an
effective approach to mankind?
BUSINESS WOMEN’S CLUB
Tomorrow’s Business Women
met Thursday, November 14 in
the Game Room. During the
business session committees
were appointed to be in charge
of the Christmas party. Another
committee was appointed to
compose a letter to be sent
to former members of the club.
Annalean McLamb introduced
the speakers on the program.
Edith Fleming spoke about her
work this summer with the Bio-
Chemistry Department at Duke
University School of Medicine.
Pat Rhue, Angelea Hatch, and
Nancy Middleton told about
their work this summer with the
Veteran’s Administration in
Washington, D. C.
