IRISH PLAYWRIGHT
LECTURES HERE
Badminton season is here!
Manager Carolyn Knight reports
that the tournament will be
played after the holidays. In
preparation for the tournament,
prospective players are required
to get in eight hours of practice.
These practices can be done at
any time the gym is not being
used for regular classes. Stu
dents may play in either the sin
gles or the doubles tournament,
or both.
The soccer tournament got un
derway Wednesday when the
sister classes played to a score
less tie. This game was followed
on Thursday by a more exciting
contest which ended with a 1-1
tie. The final game of the tour
nament will be played on Mon
day. Captain Peggy Patrick of
the Sophomore- Senior team and
Captain Ree Harmon of the
Freshman-Junior team report
that much enthusiasm is being
shown. This enthusiasm was well
; demonstrated by Jane Middle-
ton, who, determined that her
team should come through, sac
rificed the use of her big toe and
right foot. Her spirit, however, is
not broken. Let’s go out and
support these girls who help to
keep the athletic spirit alive on
our campus!

in his own. At the present he is

j in modern drama and is a con-
jsultant in playwrighting at the
i University of North Carolina.

The Night Before
’Tis the night before Christ
mas (holidays) and all through
the Meredith halls, not a crea
ture was stirring, not even a
mouse. But wait, something is
wrong; did we say nothing was
stirring — nothing, that is, but
several hundred girls bent on
bedlam!
Festivities are preceded by up-
swept hair-dos and slinky for-
mals. candle lights, and a spicy
smell of cedar and pine at the
Christmas dinner. Back to the
rooms with some hasty, last-
minute packing, and, then!
Around 10:30 the official hall
parties begin. From the social
rooms, site of the first parties,
the merriment proceeds to the
rooms — now humming with
last-night preparations and
squeals and cries in anticipation
of “this time next week’s” go
ing on.
Ordinarily at this time of night
lights begin to blink off, but not
tonight. As the night progresses,
the premature “peace on earth,
good will to man” theme takes
on momentum until, say, 2 a.m.
Yes, all you freshmen, in the
morning the entire dorm is
rocking — quite literally.
One might think that by, say,
3:30 everything and body would
be worn down^ if only slightly,
but, no, the carolers are all ready
and rarin’ to go out in the brisk,
in fact, cold gray dawn with a
song on the lips, and a twinkle in
their eyes, the latter soon, soon
to be a rather glassy stare—the
song?-^“Silent Night”—but not
to be taken too literally.
