-JStsL Page Four THE TWIG February 14, 1947 STUDENT ELECTIONS BEGIN THIS WEEK Elections began this weel with the student body’s voting on nominees for president oi Student Government, president of the Baptist Student Union, and president of the Athletic Association, the three major offices on the campus. The Points System Committee, under the chairmanship of Joan Drake, is revising completely the elec tion system at Meredith. The new system, however, will not go into effect until one year hence, at the time of the next elections, and will therefore be put into practice the following school year—1948-’49. Under the new plan, offices will be di vided into major and minor cate gories, and more girls will be able to hold office. UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA GLEE CLUB. The University Men’s Glee Club has been a distinguished choral group for many years. During the last quarter century the club has toured all the east ern sections of the United States, given special concerts in New York, and completed an European tour. At present the club is com posed of over one hundred and fifty men, carefully selected from students at the University on their ability as singers and musi cians. Mr. Paul Young, an As sociate Professor in the Music Department directed the group. Iris HOME ECONOMICS CLUB I At the first meeting of the new year, Tuesday, January 17, held I at five o’clock in the game room on the first floor Vann, a running summary of literature most valuable to home economists, teachers, etc., was presented to the members of the Home Economics Club. The following girls participated in the pro gram: Edith Timberlake, brief ing the Better Foods Magazine; Trudy Harris, the Colhecon; Mary Anne Beam, What’s New in Home Economics; Joyce Thomas, Consumers’ Guide; Letha Bullock, Practical Home Economics; and Albertine Rozar, The Journal of Home Economics. After the program, a white Betty lamp, the club symbol, which was a gift of Miss Ellen Brewer, was presented to the club by Rosemary Fulmer, pres ident of the club. It was announced that plans are being made for a spring fashion show sponsored by the Home Economics Club to be given February 25. After the business ses sion, Miss Hattie Parrott, guest speaker, spoke to the members. Miss Parrott, who is a member of the State Department of Di rected Education, made a very interesting talk about the place and importance of music in the jrihool i'i’rriculum. An i*.-._rmal discussion period followed. EDUCATION CLUB The regular monthy me of the Education Club was neld fuesday nigjit-, at 8:00 in the hut. The president presided over the business part of the meeting and then turned the program over to the vice president who introduced the guest speaker. Dr. N. C. New- bold, head of Negro Education in North Carolina, who ex plained the present status of Negro education in this state. The meeting was brought to a close with a social hour. SOCIOLOGY CLUB The Sociology Club held its monthly meeting in the Hut on January 21 at 6:45 p.m. Dr. Ellen Winston, State Commis sioner of Public Welfare, spoke on the opoprtunities for women in State Welfare work.
