Emphasis Week in Review
By BARBARA SHELLSMITH
on
On March 3rd we started out
what we called Religious
Emphasis Week with the theme
Christian Life in the Making.”
But — we started out with two
objectives in view; (1) to stimu
late clear thinking about a per
son’s relation to God, about the
absolute claims of Christ upon
a Christian’s life, about the
Christian’s relation to his fellow-
men, and (2) to intensify this
relationship to God by means of
prayer, Bible Study, Christian
service, worship, fellowship, and
bearing witness of Christian
faith to all who need it. Now we
must pause to see if we have
attained our aims.
Have we really been stimu
lated into clear thinking about
God and Christ? Each of us
must answer this question for
himself. Certainly Dr. Cranford
has led our thinking into deeper
paths through his discussions of
“Convictions to Live By,” “This
I Believe About God,” and “This
I Believe About Jesus.” He has
built for us a “tent of religious
life” staked down on the sides
by poles which proclaim the
message that 1) God is love, 2)

the universe is moral, 3) Christ
is the way, 4) there is an in
herent eternal worth of man.
We have heard talks in “Pause
For Power” each day on “Chris
tian Life in the Making in the
Arts, Applied Sciences, and
other fields of study” which
have brought us to a greater
awareness of the fact that Chris
tianity must be carried into all
phases of life. Our thinking has
been developed still more
through the group discussions
led by local pastors and teachers
on Monday, Tuesday, and Thurs
day evenings, for it was here
that we were given opportuni
ties to voice our own problems
and have them thrashed out
with the aid of the leaders.
It seems then that we can all
agree that we have been chal
lenged. Our thoughts have been
led into deeper roads; our vision
has been refreshed and length
ened. Thus, we come to our sec
ond objective: to intensify this
relationship to God in the days
that are to come through prayer,
Bible study, and worship. We
are unable to say whether we
have obtained our objective or
not for this depends now on you.
Whether or not you carry the
theme of Religious Emphasis
Week forward into every min
ute of your own life is the
answer to the question; Have
we achieved our objectives? Re
member—You.

The Senior Class team is the
winner of the basketball tour
nament. They defeated the Jun
ior team on Wednesday, Febru
ary 26 in their last game. The
tournament was one of the most
successful athletic activities for
many seasons.
Ann Josey, freshman, scored
a total of forty points in three
games to put her on top as the
highest scorer of the tourna
ment. Mary Lou Dobbins with
thirty-eight points was second,
while Ruth Martin and Martha
Lou Stephenson tied for third
place with thirty-two points
each.
A committee composed of the
basketball manager, the four
class team captains and Miss
Phyllis Cunningham have an
nounced their choice for the
varsity team. These girls were
chosen on the basis of their
playing ability and their sports
manship attitudes. They are Ann
Josey, Lefty Pugh, Ruth Martin,
Jewel Harrell, Jean Griffith,
Peggy Lewis, Pat Lancaster,
Harriet Neese. On Tuesday,
March 11, the varsity tearn
played a faculty team composed
of some of our more “brawny
brains” of the women faculty
members.

In conclusion, let us say . . .
“going steady” must be a popu-
-G-r hbivjg, An- -okc-
making it a practice. Also, “Bill”
and “Bob” must be popular
names, for so many girls go
steady with them. Still, there
are two steadies named “Percy”
and one named “Aubrey.” Even
after all this work, no one is
sure yet whether such a practice
is a good thing or not. There are
arguments for both sides. It is
a consolation, though, to realize
that girls who want to date one
boy and one boy alone will con
tinue doing so, and girls who
want to date many boys and
always seek variety will con
tinue doing so also (that is, if
said boys are willing).
