Her other two were written in collaboration with Dr. Alice Barnwell Keith, also a member of the faculty at Meredith. “Closely related to the con tention between church and state is this study of diplomatic history as it was affected by the papal policies during an exciting decade,” Dr. Wallace says. “The years 1869 to 1878 witnessed not only the triumph of the papacy but also its great est tragedy, for Rome, the Eter nal City, passed out of the possession of Pope Pius IX into the hands of the king of Italy . . . and attempts of clericals to bring about intervention by other European states led to more important international complications. . . .” When asked how she came to choose this phase of European history on which to base her volume. Dr. Wallace said,” As I began weaving at my loom of the study of the diplomatic his tory of the seventies I kept find ing a scarlet thread running in and out of the warp and woof of material. It intrigued me so much that I determined to fol low this thread and make it the center of the pattern. The de sign I have found most reward ing.” Before coming to Meredith, Mrs. Wallace had been a mem ber of the faculty of the Uni versity of Denver, and in the past twenty-five years she has taught in the summer sessions at Wake Forest College, State College, and Meredith. She received the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the Uni versity of Denver; Master of Science from State College; and Doctor of Philosophy from Duke, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She has also done graduate work at Wake Forest and at the University of North Carolina. Dr. Wallace’s interests are varied and seemingly endless.
