Tennis fans of Raleigh had a
thrill on May 6 when Alice
Marble, popular tennis star,
visited St. Mary’s College to
give a tennis exhibition. Lucky
were the three St. Mary’s girls
who learned, under Miss Mar
ble’s expert hand, the three basic
tennis strokes. The crowd also
witnessed a match between Miss
Marble and Bill Weathers, Ra
leigh and Wake County Men’s
Singles Champion. Bill won the
first game, giving the crowd a
thrill, but Miss Marble rallied
and won two out of three games.
However, quoting a spectator
from Meredith, “I was rather
disappointed with the perform
ance as a whole. Perhaps tennis’
first lady has slipped.”
Would you like to know what
we had to eat at the A.A. break
fast? Here is the menu: Fruit
Juice, Fried Ham, Pecan Rolls
with Butter! Milk and Coffee.
And plenty of it! You know how
much we like to eat. Yum!
The Varsity Softball Team,
as recently announced, includes
Jane Middleton, Marty Davis,
Roxy Bonniville, Fran Ricks,
Ann Critcher, Cat Carpenter,
Faye Nichols, Lela Butts, Hope
Hodges, and Marianna Morris.
The softball championship tour
nament ended with the fresh
man-senior team in the victor’s
chair.
What kind of tribute is it
to a person to write a few lines
about her in a newspaper
column? Some would say, “Not
so good,” and I would be inclined
to agree. But Harriet will under
stand when we tell her that all
the printed words in the world
couldn’t express our deep love
for her. Yes, I am speaking of
Harriet Neese, President of the
Athletic Association. In a few
days she will don cap and gown
and march down the aisle to re
ceive her diploma. Then in a
few days she will walk down
another aisle to get a—husband!
But we won’t lose her when she
takes the fatal step, because her
influence on the campus will be
felt for years to come. To you,
Harriet, we say thanks for being
such a wonderful leader and the
best of everything to you and
Jason.

ready for studying. . . . Good
