Page Six THE TWIG October 9, 1948 Dr. Tribble to Lead Group MEN OF DISTINCTION A discussion group on the basic fundamental doctrines of the Christian faith will be held next Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights, Oct. 12, 13, and 14 at 7.00 p.m. in Phi Hall. Dr. Blackburn, pastor of the Wake Forest Baptist Church will lead this series of discus sions. He is a graduate of Wake Forest College, and the South ern Baptist Theological Semi nary where he received his Th.M. and Th.D. He was in the Department of Theology under Dr. Harold Tribble whose book Our Doctrines will be used as a basis for the discussion. As a result of Focus Week last year it was felt that there was a definite need to have dis cussion groups throughout the year to stimulate thought, arouse questions and give an swers to problems that students have. This is the first such group being planned for this year. Those people who wish to get credit for this in their Training Union may do so, but with or without credit this seminar should be a contribu-! tion to anyone’s Christian think- i ing and living. Lily Pons Gives Durham Concert State, Meredith B.S.U. Party Who? The B.S.U. at State College. Where? Phi Hall. When? Friday night, Septem ber 24. What? A party honoring the freshmen of State and the freshmen of Meredith. Yes, the Baptist Student Union of State College took over the fascinat ing job of playing Cupid when it joined with the Meredith B.S.U. in giving a party for the freshmen on September 24 in Phi Hall. Approximately three hundred newcomers to Raleigh —two hundred boys and one hundred girls—saw for the first time a performance by the “Andrews Sisters” of State Col lege. When this same group of students divided into smaller groups, Phi Hall became the scene of rivalry between groups involved in various games. The serving of delicious refresh- Lilly Pons, world-renowned colorature soprano of screen and concert stage, presented a con cert in Page Auditorium at Duke University, Tuesday evening, October 5. Duke was her first stop for this season’s concert tour which will carry her through all parts of the United States, ending in Montreal. In late April Miss Pons will sail for Europe for appearances at the Paris Opera House, and for con certs on the continent and Great Britain. Miss Pons’ program at Duke consisted of compositions by Pergolesi, Rachmoninoff, Bach- let, Debussy, Ravel, Verdi, and LaForge. Her program ended with the famous aria, Caro Nome from the opera Rigoletto by Verdi. This is one of the most difficult and exciting of colora tura arias. She possesses a beauti ful voice which is thrilling to hear, and was very warmly re ceived by the audience. Mis Pons was accompanied at the piano by the famous com poser and pianist, Frank La- Forge, who has been her ac companist for the past ten years. Mr. LaForge played all the num bers from memory. Miss Pons was also accompanied on sev eral numbers by Frank Versaci, flutist. A group of twenty-six Mere dith students were privileged to attend the concert. They made the trip on a chartered bus and were accompanied by Miss Beatrice Donley. Palio Date Decided On Dean Meets With Staff The annual celebration of Palio and Stunt night will be held on Saturday, October 30. The week-end will be closed during the afternoon of Palio. At the call meeting of the student body on September 25, it was decided that a committee was to be appointed by the Athletic Association to select a definite date for Homecoming in following years. Dr. L. A. Peacock, Dean of the College, and Mrs. Vera Tart Marsh, Registrar, held an in formal meeting with the new members of the instructional Staff on Friday evening, Sep tember 24, in the faculty parlor. The meeting was conducted in the manner of an open-forum during which institutional poli cies and academic procedures were discussed. After dinner coffee was served by Mrs. Marsh.
