DANCERS IN THE BALLET RUSSE
Ballet Russe l)e Monte Carlo Will Appear in
Civic Music Concert in Raleigh in February
The famous Ballet Russe de
Monte Carlo will appear in Me
morial Auditorium here in Ra
leigh on Friday night, February
10, under the auspices of the
Civic Music Association in its
current concert series.
Featuring such famous ballet
dancers as Alexandra Danilova
and Frederic Franklin, the Bal
let Russe is now in its eleventh
consecutive season. Sergei J.
Denham is director of the Bal
let.
In its last tour the Ballet
visited seventy-five cities and
forty colleges in the United
States and Canada, playing to
audiences in excess of three
quarters of a million people.
Basing its activities on the clas
sical dance traditions, the Bal
let troupe feels that the great
success of its tours is an endorse
ment of the public for such
classical traditions.
In its large repertoire, from
which the program on February
10 here in Raleigh will be taken,
a large troupe of dancers take
part; such artists, besides Dani
lova and Franklin, as Mia Slav-
enska, Leon Danielian, Ruth-
anna Boris, Mary Ellen Moylan,
Oleg Tupine, Roman Jasiasky,
Gertrude Tynen, and Nina
Novak will appear.
Incomplete Funds For
Unified Budget Plan
The Unified Budget Plan,
which was approved by both
faculty and students of the col
lege last fall, has not yet com
pleted its drive for funds with
which to put the plan into
action. Three dollars was
allotted to each student as his
contribution, but so far only
$606.50 of the required approxi
mate total of $1,350 has been
raised from the students.
Student members of the Uni
fied Budget Committee included
Elizabeth Jones, Carolyn Mas
sey, Sally Massey, and Janet
Tatum, while the faculty ad
visers are Dr. John Yarbrough,
Dr. Ernest Canaday, and Mrs.
Vera T. Marsh.
The budget which was ap
proved is as follows:
Drives Included Amts.
World Student Service Fund $ 315
Cancer Drive 110
Red Cross 400
Cary Street Mission 75
March of Dimes 250
Special Contingencies 250
$1,400
The Community Chest and
Christmas seals are not included
in this list, since they have al
ready been taken care of, and
since the Community Chest fund
is to be collected as a separate
drive.
All drives listed include stu
dent contributions and the
amounts listed are average
figures of contributions taken
over a two year period.

Miss Caroline Taylor, pianist,
was presented in concert by the
MacDowell Music Club on Jan

daughter of the Lieutenant-Gov
ernor of the state, has been
featured several times with the
North Carolina Symphony or
chestra and with other en
sembles.
After her concert, which in
cluded selections by Bach, Schu

Marsh stressed the fact that this
year no special fund-raising or
ganization would be set up at
Meredith, but that the educa
tional aspects of the drive would
be emphasized by a chapel pro
gram, the distribution of posters,
and the placing of the new Iron
Lung Coin Collectors around the
campus. Our chairman suggests
that we remember “to keep
marching mentally, physically,
and financially with the March
of Dimes.”
