THE TWIG
Maxch 7, 1952
Lon^ afternoon laboratories do not keep the science students from
having an intense interest in the wonders of the world in which they
live. Mary Ida Fisher conducts an experiment white Shirley Cliatt,
“Potsy” Averre and Miriam Allen look on.
Bread Molds, Aspirin, and Worms
Keep Seience Students Busy
By DORIS PERRY
Did you know that on Thurs
days there are so many labora
tory classes in the science build
ing that the embryology class
must meet in the stock room?
It seems that on Thursdays the
Science Building houses a mix
ture of everything from fresh
men and their worms to sopho
mores and their bread molds to
juniors making aspirin to seniors
examining chicken embryos.
This busy department on our
campus is responsible for quite
a bit of excitement and amuse
ment. Recently, in addition to
the sickening odors for which
the science department has al
ways been noted, there was
added a medley of strange mo
notonous noises. Such noises are
made by physics students who
are studying a unit on sound in
which they vibrate strings and
columns of air.
In the biology department
students have been running
blood tests and typing blood and,
of course, cutting away on the
ever popular bullfrog. On March
10-11 the biology department
will conduct a urinalysis of the
entire student body. Later in
the spring biology students will
go to Beaufort for a weekend
to study marine life there. You
have probably noticed that em
bryology students now turn up
their noses at the sight of eggs.
Perhaps this fact may be at
tributed to their recently ac
quired knowledge that the em
bryonic chick’s heart begins to
beat when the egg is two days
old.
In the chemistry lab, burning
filter paper recently created a
bit of excitement. Mr. William
R. Pasewark dropped in to ask
for some roasted marshmallows
—which were not marshmallows
but burning filter paper. At

about the same time someone
else ran in to ask if the building
were on fire. She was disap
pointed to learn that it was filter
paper burning instead of the
building.
The day of State’s midwinter
dances, the chemistry students
made yellow dye. Naturally,
some girls spilled the dye on
their hands—and naturally it
wouldn’t come off — so there
were several tuxedos at the
dance upon which were perched
canary yellow hands.
The distillation of ethyl alco
hol (you know, “white light
ning’’!) created another stir in
the chemistry lab. Several State
college students became quite
interested in the experiment and
were eventually given samples
of the thrice-distilled product.
The snow last week led to still
another unique experience in
the chemistry lab, the making of
snow cream. Other recent lab
oratory periods have been de
voted to making soap and aspirin
and studying limestone.
Laboratory assistants for the
science department include Shir
ley Cliatt, Elinor Averre, Sally
Massey, Elizabeth Hamrick, Pat
Smathers, Miriam Allen, Mel
rose Canaday, Penina Bowden,
Lois Turpin Hunter, Janie Dil
lard, and Carleen Kinlaw.
Meredith science majors have
found places for themselves in
the world. Several graduates
are technicians at Rex hospital;
one is interning at Wilmington,
N. C. One graduate is working
with the Bureau of Standards in
Washington, D. C. Others are
teaching, and still others are
doing graduate work.
Dr. Mary Yarbrough, head of
the chemistry department, is
now doing research work with
Dr. Hirschberg, bacteriologist,
of the North Carolina State
Laboratory of Hygiene.

Flagstad Will Appear
In Concert March 27
Kirsten Flagstad, famous so
prano on her fourth transconti
nental concert tour, will appear
at Raleigh’s Memorial Audi
torium on March 27 under the
auspices of the Raleigh Civic
Music Association.
The Norwegian soprano made
her debut at the Metropolitan
Opera in 1935 in the role of
Sieglinde in “Die Walkvere.”
She is known for her interpreta
tions of Wagnerian roles.
Although Kirsten did not begin
formal study until she was six
teen, she learned the role of
Elsa in “Lohengrin” at the age
of ten, and performed her first
operatic part in Tiefiand at
eighteen. In Oslo, Norway, she
sang roles in “Carmen,” “Faust,”
“Aida,” “Tosca,” “Orfeo;” but
since her operatic debut in
America she has performed
principally in “A Ring Cycle,”
“Tristian and Isolde,” ’’Fidelio,”
and “Aleste.”
