Softball Varsity
Defeats Wake Forest
By LORRETTE OGLESBY
The Meredith softball varsity
fought their way to a 12-5 tri
umph over the Wake Forest
team in a game at Meredith
Tuesday afternoon. Playing for
Meredith were Sue Fitzgerald,
Salty Salter, Joyce Burns, Jane
Cate, Nancy Hall, Ann Lovell,
Sally Massey, Jean Pace, Ruth
Jeanne Allen, and Joyce Bailey.
Wake Forest started the game
off with a 2-1 lead at the end of
the first inning, but the Angels
came out on top at the end of
the second and led the score to
the end of the game. Joyce
Burns, a freshman day student,
won special recognition for her
self with a home run and good
defensive work for her team.
Folk Dance Recital
Has Toy Shop Theme
By GEORGANNE JOYNER
In costumes of dancers from
many countries, the Meredith
College Folk Dance Group
opened their annual Spring
Concert Thursday, May 15, with
the Waltz of the Bells.
Under the direction of Miss
Doris Peterson, assisted by Mrs.
Katherine Adams and Mrs.
Ruth Nickelson, the group pre
sented a program well received
by the audience. Members of
the Athletic Association Board
served as marshals for the per
formance.
The first part of the program
consisted of a group of thirteen
numbers. Dances selected from
foreign countries included an

the National Dance of Scotland;

cowboy style; the National
Dance of Mexico, during which
the girls danced about the rim
of their partners’ hats; and
dances adopted from Russia, Po
land, Bavaria, and Germany. To
climax the first half, seven
dancers presented an exotic
number of Egyptian origin.
A story in dance, An Old
World Toy Shop, made up the
latter part of the program. The
first act revealed an old shop
keeper who was very proud of
his collection of mechanical
dolls and toys. He was saddened
each time he had to part with a
single doll. A real tragedy
occurred when a couple insisted
on buying only one of a pair of
beautiful dancing dolls for their
little daughter. Both dolls
broke down when they were
separated, and neither could be
made to dance. When it was
finally decided that both dolls
be delivered to the little girl on
the following day, the dancing
dolls magically regained their
mechanical ability.
How little the toyshop keeper
knew of what went on in his
shop while he slept was dis
played in act two by the
Dresden China Dolls, Gypsy
Dolls, the Soldier and Sweet
heart, Wooden Soldiers, the
Princes and Princesses, Chinese
Dolls, Tyrolean Dolls, Dutch
Dolls, and Raggedy Ann and
Andy, who all performed at the
wish of the Dancing Dolls. The
story by Lewis Chalif, created
a delightful performance for the
group.

was Kitten James. Mrs. J. T.
Lynn was accompanist and Miss
Judith Mayes dramatic advisor.

PICNIC
The new Athletic Association
members were entertained re
cently by the old board at a pic
nic at Crabtree Park. A rather
severe storm arose about an
hour before the appointed time
for the outing and the group
was in debate as to whether the
trip could be made. But the sun
reappeared by five o’clock and
the group proceeded to Crab
tree. Things were rather wet but
there were no dampened appe
tites and the food committee
was well prepared, so everyone
had a wonderful time.
SOFTBALL
The Softball Tournament is in
progress. It began Monday, May
5, with a play-off between the
Freshman team and the Sopho
more team. The Sophomores
came out on the short end of
the score, incidentally. The next
game was between the Junior-
Senior team and the Sopho
mores. Again the Sophomores
lost, this time with a score of
10-11. Two losses won a rest for
the Sophomores and now the
contest is between the Junior-
Senior team and the Freshmen.
Only three innings of the usual
five-innings have been played
as yet and the score for these
three innings was tied.
BICYCLING
Chances are that Meredith
students will be enjoying a new
individual sport next year —-
bicycling. The board decided to
spend an eighty dollar donation
of the class of 1945 on two new
bicycles. A committee has been
appointed and are shopping
around for a good buy.
