r October 3, 1952 THE TWIG Page three c IN THE AIR f By BETTY MILLER Music is rather slow in taking to the air this year, but once it gets started, all non-music stu dents might as well wave good bye to music majors. We started preparing for our winter hiber nation Thursday. It was really wonderful to see twenty-one freshman music majors signing up for practice hours. Miss Donley has her usual large group in chorus this year. There are seventy voices. Twen ty of these girls sang at the meeting of the Raleigh Bible So ciety in our auditorium re cently. Have you met the new music faculty members? Mr. Edwin Blanchard is the new voice in structor, and Miss Axworthy is the new theory and piano in structor. In case you didn’t know. Miss Janet Anderson was married last summer, and Miss Ruth Woodman decided the Air Force was more in her line. We surely were sorry to lose those two teachers. The Civic Music Concerts sound as though they’re going to be terrific, don’t they? Here’s the order in which they’ll come: November 24, Alexander Brail- owsky, pianist December 16, Robert Shaw Chorale and Symphony Or chestra January 7, The Ballet Theatre January 30, Jerome Hines, Bass-Baritone March 4, Indianapolis Sym phony Orchestra Somebody showed me a pic ture of Jerome Hines, and he’s just out of this world. He’s six foot seven, twenty-eight years old, and good looking. He’s a star in the Metropolitan Opera Company, to boot. Even if he does come during exams, he’s worth missing a night’s study. The Sigma Alpha Iota Music Fraternity is giving a “welcome tea” for the new music students next Thursday. See you then! MAC JOSEPH’S The School is staffed by Re serve Officers recalled for the summer from schools and offi ces across the nation. The can didates themselves follow a military schedule. They are quartered }n barracks and dressed in summer gray, move in platoon formation to classes, chow, and the drill hall. They keep a 24-hour watch in their own areas, stand inspections, and pass in review with other naval units. During the 1952 session fre quent excursions to nearby na val installations such as the Philadelphia Navy Yard, the Tay lor Model Boat Basin, and the Naval Academy at Annapolis gave the officer trainees a glimpse of the working Navy. Nor has the social aspect of their training been neglected. Ex change dances with men prepar ing for training at the Academy were arranged while week-end liberty permitted the ROCs to go ashore in informal groups as far as Washington, D. C., or New York or entertain their guests on the station.
